  • Willkaraqay

Willkaraqay was a fort on the Inca trail to guard it from enemies. Today is was home to horses that would peer at you around corners.

The walls are all rough fieldstone in mortar construction.

Nearby was a path to a hill for making sacrifices.

The middle of the flattened hill still has an altar.

The fort is in pretty good condition.

  • Patallaqta

The first major set of ruins we passed on the Inca Trail was Patallaqta.

Patallaqta once had about 100 houses which were used by the soldiers that guarded the Willkaraqay Fort on the trail above.

There were also places for travellers down the trail (like us) to stay overnight.

It also had a small temple, probably to the sun.

Patallaqta was burned in 1536 by the Incans to prevent the Spanish from following them down the trail.
