  • Waiting for Ocelots

The lodge has a little ocelot playground set up where the ocelot likes to visit.

    image

With a place for us to hide.

    image

And stare at the tree branches until they look like they have eyes.

    image

Waiting for the ocelot to show up.

    image

    The ocelot never showed up.

    image

    Maybe next time.

    image

On the way back we heard an armadillo and saw a snake.

    image

    So that’s something.

    image

After that we went on a night game drive and saw a couple deer.

    image

Overall, not a very successful night.

  • Little Birds

    This is a cattle tyrant

    image

It has a yellow belly and a grey head.

    image

    Just like this king bird

    image

    And this great kiskadee

    image

I think the bird naming people are mocking us

    image

    This is a mockingbird

    image

    He didn’t seem very happy.

    image

    Now who’s head is this?

    image

It could be this rufous hornero

    image

Or it could be one of the birds above, I really don’t remember.

    image

The colourful birds are more memorable

    image

Than these boring yellow and brown ones

    image

But they’re too quick to get good pictures of

    image

Ugly birds are better at sitting still.

  • Purple Flowers

There are a lot of purple flowers in the Pantanal.

    image

There are also some other colours of flowers.

    image

    But mostly purple.

    image

They stand out a lot from the green

    image

    Everywhere is purple and green

    image

    The purple flowers are tiny

    image

The bees seem to like them

    image

They spend a lot of time going flower to flower

  • Black Collared Hawk

This is a black collared hawk.

    image_thumb[3]

His collar is more dark brown than black.

    image_thumb[5]

But they didn’t let us pick the name.

    image_thumb[4]

I would have called him something different.

    image

    Like the lazyboy hawk.

    image

Because he had this funny leaning back posture.

    image

Like a hawk in a lazyboy.

    image

But I wouldn’t want to make him angry.

    image

He was probably just having trouble holding on in the wind.

  • Agami Heron

We saw an agami heron. Our guide was very impressed.

    image

Bird watchers come from all over the world to see one, and most don’t succeed.

    image

We were more impressed by the toucan.  You’ll never see a heron on a cereal box.

    image

Next to the agami heron was a boat-billed heron.

    image

He’s almost funny looking enough for a cereal box.

    image

The agami flew away before we got any good pictures.
