  • Hyenas

The spotted hyenas will wander during the day looking for food.

    image

The other animals don’t seem to mind too much.

    image

Well the healthy ones at least.

    image

They get a lot of looks from the herds though.

    image

But they are lazy hunters and all the animals know.

    image

Sometimes they decide to have a sit. It is pretty hot out during the day.

    image

But you can find them at all different times of the day.

    image

These animals are too big to really be worried about the hyenas but they still keep a watchful eye.

  • Smaller Serengeti Carnivores

In the tall grasses we sometimes spotted a few smaller Carnivores.

    image

They weren’t easy to spot. This is a servile cat.

    image

They weren’t all in the tall grass. This is a banded mongoose.

    image

He was hanging out around the visitor centre.

    image

Here is another good picture of a servile cat.

    image

They look cute, while at the same time a bit terrifying.

    image

This is a wild African cat. Looks like a big house cat.

    image

    An angry hunting housecat.

    image

This one looks a lot cooler with all the spots.

    image

It was far too hot for the banded jackal to be out and about.

  • Cheetahs

There are three cheetahs in this picture. They are right there by the tree.

    image

Want to go for a walk?

    image

    They can spot you!

    image

But they aren’t ready to hunt us. Something smaller perhaps.

    image

    Time for a walk.

    image

Have to go find some dinner.

    image

The people that didn’t do the hot air balloon got to see one grab breakfast.

    image

They said it was over pretty quickly.

    image

It is still a bit unnerving how well they blend in. We stayed in the jeep.

  • Serengeti Hippopotamuses

The Serengeti hippos are more active during the day.

    image

The water isn’t very deep so they have to go for walks between the different parts.

    image

Most still have a good time chilling in the pools.

    image

It is important to get a good days sleep.

    image

Stacking with friends is important too.

    image

The birds hop around on the back keeping them tick free. While the ticks on the other side get drowned after several hours in the water.

  • Serengeti Birds

In between hunting for the big animals and cats we saw lots of birds. We don’t remember the name of most so if you want to know there are some excellent guides out there.

Starting us off is this weird looking rather large bird. Not ostrich big but still quite close.

    image

This little guy would not stay still. Kept flying back and forth between the ground and this little branch. Just before the jeep pulled away Kerri managed to get this shot.

    image

Up in the trees we spotted a vulture nest.

    image

Oh this is a lilac breasted flycatcher.

    image

Here are more vultures, but black headed.

    image

This little one was helping clean off a hippo.

    image

This looks like some sort of hawk.

    image

These guys were funny because they would fan their tail feathers in the tree like the birds back in Australia.

    image

Not sure why this is but the foot suggests it doesn’t eat small insects and seeds.

    image

There were a few pelicans around too.

    image

We got to see a few of the crowned cranes again too.
