  • Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an island off the coast of Tanzania with beautiful white sand beaches.

    image

The beach has nice chairs. You could borrow mats from the hotel to put on them which made them really comfy.

    image

The white sand continued way back from the beach with lots of shady palm trees.

    image

This is our hotel room there are four rooms in there. The top floor under the peak is our room.

    image

Like everywhere in Africa the sun never seems to set properly, it just dissolves into the haze on the horizon, even when it is not cloudy.

    image

    These are their traditional boats.

    image

They were used to transport spices all over the Indian ocean, but they had to follow the seasonal winds and unusual weather would leave the traders stranded.

    image

The beach had a lot of little ghost crabs.

    image

There were also some evil looking birds.

    image

Possibly cannibalistic evil birds. Or maybe he just wound up with one of his own feathers in his mouth.

    image

There were lots of pretty shells on the beach.

    image

    Which you probably shouldn’t touch.

    image

It was a very nice break.

  • Zanzibar Spice Tour

Our trip to Zanzibar would not have been complete without a spice plantation tour. To start off this is cinnamon. Based on how it dried, probably cassia cinnamon like we get at home.

    image

It smells very sweet and smells really good.

    image

They only take off a bit and it regrows just fine.

    image

This is what the tree looks like.

    image

The next stop was for lemongrass.

    image

That grows as a bushy grass.

    image

From there we sampled cardamom. By smell at least the seeds are very strong.

    image

Next was a stop at this little plant.

    image

These are curry leaves from the previous plant.

    image

After going above ground we had to do a little digging. This is tumeric, which is primarily used as a colouring agent in food.

    image

There were a few fruits on the trees too. This is similar to durian, maybe bread fruit but can’t remember.

    image

This plant is sour soup. I think it was medicinal.

    image

This is a birds eye chili or as they call it: Pilipili ho ho.

    image

I think these flowers are used as a cosmetic dye.

    image

This was another medicinal plant, cannot remember what for.

    image

Here is some really unripe starfruit. Kerri liked it because it was really sour.

    image

You may recognize this next one. It is pineapple.

    image

This tree is what really gave Zanzibar their spot in history. And today they are still picked by hand as most of the spices.

    image

A short interlude to keep you in suspense.

    image

The answer is cloves. Here are the buds ready for picking and drying.

    image

Another giant fruit in season is Jackfruit.

    image

Here are the cloves again after picking them off the stems.

    image

    There is the flower inside.

    image

They grow a large amount of tea too and here are the flowers.

    image

Here are Vanilla pods still on the tree. They are not quite ready to be picked and dried.

    image

They grow some chocolate too but this pod was really unripe.

    image

Here they are on the tree.

  • The Lion and the Baby Antelope

The lion was playing with the baby antelope.image

    Doesn’t it look like fun?

You might think, like Matt, that the ferocious lion was playing with himself at this point.

    image

But every time she put down the antelope, it would try to stand up and run away again.

    image

So clearly they are just taking a break in the shade from playing.

    image

See how she gently licks the baby antelope.

    image

    Just like she licks herself.

    image

And when she sucks on his head, that’s just a very strange game.

    image

He was still very much alive when we drove off, so we assume everything ended well.

  • Leopard

We finally got to see a leopard.

    image

In true form it was up in a tree.

    image

It was all sleepy after hunting. You can see it off to the right in the crook of the tree.

    image

They look so innocent and peaceful.

    image

So innocent, cute, and not a terrifying killer of gazelle.
