The king penguins seem to like yoga.

They do the backwards rubber neck

And arm flaps

Lots of rubber neck stretches

Sometimes it’s hard to even figure out what direction the neck is going.

Then there’s the foot-to-the-side-balance

The 180 degree neck rotation

The nose-under-the-wing

The forward plank

The toe-to-ear

The nose-to-toe

Even the teenagers get into it

I bet you can’t bring your toes up to your forehead and you have much longer legs!

Not all of the penguins were sleek and smooth.

The teenagers are king fluffballs.

They can’t swim because they still have their fluffy feathers

But sometimes they try anyway.

The really fluffy one didn’t try though

He was wet enough from the rain.

It must be embarrassing being the only teenager that’s still all fluffy

When your buddies only have fluffy heads

And you have fluff all the way down to your tail

In the rain

But I think fluff head actually looks more ridiculous.

He wanted to get in the water

He examined it very closely

While the fluffy one dared him to jump.

But he didn’t go in

He’s a fluffy chicken

So he turned and headed back toward the crowd.

These are the kings of penguins

Not the emperors

Those live on the far side of Antarctica

Their empire is all ice

The kings have a kingdom of rocks and grass.

Kerri was very excited to be visiting their kingdom

But she didn’t let Matt turn her head away from the penguins for long.

The penguins were very regal

They kept their noses turned up all the time

And trumpeted announcements

It must be hard to have a whole species of kings

Everyone trying to boss everyone else around all the time

Some of them hung out in little groups

But most of them were just standing around

Looking this way and that

Being kingly

These king penguins weren’t with the others.

They just showed up on the rocky part of the island a couple weeks ago.

They also liked yoga

And were bossy

And liked dancing

And singing

Loudly

But they didn’t have any fluffballs

Because they didn’t have any nests

They just stood around in lines

Looking at us

Confused
