  • Mongeese

There were lots of mongeese at the campsite in Etosha.

    image

You might think they prefer to be called mongooses, but they don’t.

    image

And although the dictionary says both are correct, I’m not sure you want to mess with a mongoose.

    image

They can make really annoying noises when they are upset.

They also have sharp, vicious little teeth for killing snakes.

    image

Our tour leader assured me he’s never known anyone who got bit by one.

    image

But I wouldn’t mess with him if I were you.

  • Lion Bachelor Hangout

By the waterhole all of the boy lions were hanging out.

    image

They seemed to be enjoying themselves in the shade.

    image

Every time they rolled over they got more stuff caught in their fur.

    image

The manes were extra fur for it to get caught in.

    image

But the manes weren’t as obvious as we were expecting.

    image

We wondered how many boys we have already seen and just assumed they were girls.

    image

Two of the boys just wanted to sleep.

    image

But the big one got up and licked his lips.

    image

And wandered over to another tree.

    image

Where he sniffed and marked his territory.

    image

Then he walked back slowly because the sun was hot.

    image

And lied down next to his much smaller brother.

    image

The little guy was not very happy at this rude awakening.

    image

Then he lied back down for another nap.

  • Etosha

In Etosha the trees have no leaves in the dry season, and the dust made it look like a frosty winter day.

    image

All the rocks were covered, but they were white and fine themselves.

    image

The one tree with leaves was very popular for shade.

    image

Everyone else came to hangout near the waterholes.

    image

The Kudu blend in pretty good here with their very light fur.

They had some spiders that were clearly catching birds.

    image

Even as the sun set everyone was still hanging out around the water hole, like these giraffes and jackals.

  • White Elephants

The elephants in Etosha were white from all of the dust.

    image

This made them camouflage fairly well. Not that they need to because nothing eats them.

    image

Somehow they still managed to find green things to eat in all the whiteness.

    image

They seemed very happy about that.
