  • Other Chobe Antelopes

    This is a sable antelope.

    image

By this time we were pretty overwhelmed with antelopes.

    image

They are all really just food for the interesting things anyway.

    image

When you read old books talking about beautiful women having the eyes of a gazelle, think of this. It’s rather weird.

    image

These are waterbuck. And a cut off elephant. We really aren’t sure why Kerri picked this picture.

  • Oxpeckers

Oxpeckers are little birds that land on other animals to eat the bugs off of them.

    image

They spend a lot of time on giraffe necks. Partially because the giraffe is mostly neck, but also because they want to get at the face, which the giraffes don’t like.

    image

They are very noisy, which did not impress the buffalo.

    image

    The hippos mostly ignore them.

    image

    Even when they swarm around.

    image

    And land on all sides.

    image

    Still singing loudly.

    image

But the hippos really hate when they get into fresh wounds and pick at the sore flesh.

    image

Then the hippos try to roll to get them off, which looks really funny.

    image

Finally the hippo gave up napping and got up to get into the water.

  • Chobe Hippos

There were hippos everywhere in Chobe national park.

    image

Some were sleeping in the mud.

    image

Some were sleeping on the land.

    image

And some were sleeping in the water.

    image

As it got late they started yawning.

    image

    Then they got up.

    image

A hippo getting up looks really funny.

    image

    Then they started to graze.

    image

With those big grass grazing teeth.

  • Drinking Giraffe

    Giraffes sometimes get thirsty.

    image

This is a problem because the water is a very long way down.

    image

So they have to spread their legs and look really dumb to get a drink.

    image

    Which can’t be comfortable.

    image

And then they have to get all the way back up again.

    image

And discover they have water up their nose.

    image

    Which doesn’t taste very good.

    image

    Or maybe it does.

    image

Yep, it must taste pretty good after all.

  • African Wild Dogs

An African wild dog ran down the road in Chobe.

    image

This caused great excitement, because usually when they are running during the day they are hunting. They hunt in big packs and chase down antelopes over long distances until they get too tired.

So we chased it for a while but never found the pack.

    image

But we did find another pack sleeping by the highway.

    image

Though they are called wild dogs, they are actually not even in the same genus as Dani.

    image

Dani is more closely related to wolves and coyotes.

    image

    They have gigantic ears.

    image

Other than that they look pretty dog like.
