  • Owl

We saw two pearl spotted owlets in Chobe. They often hunt during the day, and the small birds don’t like them around because they eat chicks. So they make a horrible racket trying to annoy it into flying away. This makes the owls really easy to find even though they are tiny and camouflage well.

They have fake eyes on the back of their head. Kind of like Mom.

    image

They also have real eyes on the front of their head.

    image

And they can turn their head so far around that they don’t need eyes on the back.

  • Chobe Elephants

There were tons of elephants in Chobe national park.

    image

Actually given that a single elephant can be 7 tons that’s a bit of an understatement.

    image

I don’t know why a multiple ton animal would stand with his legs crossed.

    image

But it must be comfortable, because he stayed that way for a long time.

    image

This one stood in the road with a stick in his mouth and blocked our path for a while.

    image

They look much smaller with their ears in.

    image

    Than with their ears out.

    image

The ones by the water were drinking.

    image

They must lose as much water as they succeed in drinking.

    image

They also seemed to be engaging in elephant yoga.

    image

    Which looked really funny.

    image

They also look funny when they run.

    image

There were all different sizes of elephants in this herd.

  • Chobe Jackals

We saw a lot of jackals in Chobe National Park.

    image

    They are basically puppies.

    image

Except that they will take a bite out of you if you’re not paying attention.

    image

    They like the long grass.

    image

It hides them and their burrows completely.

    image

But the adults also like to sleep in the sun.
