  • Natural History Museum of Ethiopia

This museum is very small. It just has preserved samples of all of the local wildlife. So Kerri got a preview of what we’ll be searching for the next two months.

Yes, we are really in Africa now.

    image

This is why we got rabies shots.

    image

There are two types of hyenas. The spotted hyena is a pretty respectable looking animal.

    image

The striped hyena somehow manages to look even nastier than the Lion King villains.

    image

Pumba looks much less friendly than in the Lion King.

    image

I think they should redo the movie starring a clawless otter. He is much cuter. And less scary. He doesn’t even have claws.

    image

And a caracal. It doesn’t look like it wants to eat me.

    image

They have lots of birds that don’t look like they want to eat me.

    image

But their ravens look even nastier than the Fort McMurray ones.

    image

They have two types of zebra in Ethiopia. But we aren’t actually going to get outside of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. And I think there are other kinds where we are going.

    image

We will be staying away from the water.

The location for this mirror was poorly chosen.

This is Ardi. She is 4.4 million years old.

    image

We don’t have very much of her skull.

    image

But we have lots of her teeth.

    image

But we have enough of her hands and feet to know that she walked with a flat foot with her toes pointed outward. She still climbed a lot of trees but probably wasn’t as graceful climbing as chimpanzees are.

    image

This is Lucy. She lived 3.15 million years ago. She was the first substantial hominid skeleton found.

    image

This is Selam. She is the same species as Lucy but lived 3.3 million years ago. She was only 3 years old when she died.

    image

This is what her skull looked like before it was fully excavated.

    image

    And here it is now.
