  • Vanished World

After leaving Christchurch we made our way into the land of Lord of the Rings where strange creatures lurk (left) and lurked (right).

    image

The skull is from a shark-toothed dolphin which lived about 25 million years ago.

    image

This is the rest of its body.

    image

All this area was underwater so there are lots of shells, whales and dolphins.

    image

The rock is limestone which makes it a bit more difficult to excavate than the fossils in Drumheller.

    image

The preservation is really good and you can see some cross sections of the bones.

    image

They have found fossils of giant penguins in the area. Still not as big as Kerri though.

    image

There were more Moa bones here although those are much younger from when the Maori had just come to the shores of New Zealand.

    image

They also had cool rock concretions. These types of deposits form spheres that end up all over a couple of the beaches.

    image

Here Kerri was hard at work excavating a fossilized shell. They have much different regulations on fossils here. It feels weird for them to just be given away.

  • Big Tree Walk

We set off along a path described by Lonely Planet as “wheelchair accessible” to see a big tree.

    image

The big tree is a rakau rangatira which is over 1000 years old. It is 31m tall and 8.4m wide.

    image

The roots are huge and go very far from the tree even above ground.

    image

There was no one else around so we gave it a hug so it wouldn’t be so lonely.

  • Medieval Mosaic

This is the world’s biggest sweater. It was a bit big for Matt. image

This is the world’s largest recreation of the Bayeux Tapestry

    image

Made out of 2 million pieces of steel broken off of old weaving machine cogs, painstakingly arranged to form a grid, attached together with masking tape, with the gaps filled in with shoe polish, and the pattern painted on top.

    image

We know it is the world’s largest recreation of the tapestry, because he wasn’t satisfied with just recreating the tapestry, and had to add large sections to complete the story.

    image

Underneath all of that, there are a series of puzzles hidden in the pattern of gold and silver tiles underneath the images.

    image

In the half hour Matt gave her, Kerri failed to find even the first clue. 🙁

  • Christchurch Botanical Gardens

It was raining and cold in Christchurch but the flowers were open and everything was really green.

    image

Even the bees were out working before winter sets in.

    image

The birds in New Zealand are not what we see at home.

    image

And the flowers are a bit more colouful.

    image

Well some of the birds are similar like this magpie.

    image

Okay and there are mallards here too.

    image

They were enjoying the water in the river next to the park.

    image

They didn’t mind the cold water at all.
