  • Don’t Bug a Caiman

    Caiman are pretty ferocious looking.

    image

If I were a bug, I would stay away.

    image

    I certainly wouldn’t crawl around in a caiman’s eyes.

    image

    Or perch on its nose.

    image

But Kerri is not a bug.

    image

    She’s not afraid of Caiman

    image

Even when there are lots of them.

    image

And some of them are camouflaged really well.

    image

The heron thought she was crazy.

    image

But that cute little caiman wouldn’t hurt a fly!

    image

This guy has lettuce in his teeth, he must be vegetarian!

    image

I don’t know where the blood near his eye came from, but I’m sure it’s his.

  • Parakeets

The Jabiru storks have some very noisy neighbours in their basement.

    image

The parakeets just move right in to the bottom of the nest

    image

Hanging upside down from the rafters

    image

Throwing loud parties all of the time

    image

    They aren’t very good neighbours

    image

I would kick them out if I was a stork.

  • Birds

There are a lot of birds in the Pantanal.

    image

In fact, there are more species of birds in the Pantanal than in all of North America.

    image

    There are little birds.

    image

And there are big rhea that we drove by but forgot to take pictures of.

There are birds that look kind of scary.

    image

There are birds that fish in the water.

    image

    And birds that eat seeds.

    image15

    And birds that eat insects.

    image4[1]_thumb

There are birds that look like birds at home.

    image

    And birds that don’t.

    image

There was even a bird’s nest on top of the Welcome to the Pantanal sign.

  • Waiting for Ocelots

The lodge has a little ocelot playground set up where the ocelot likes to visit.

    image

With a place for us to hide.

    image

And stare at the tree branches until they look like they have eyes.

    image

Waiting for the ocelot to show up.

    image

    The ocelot never showed up.

    image

    Maybe next time.

    image

On the way back we heard an armadillo and saw a snake.

    image

    So that’s something.

    image

After that we went on a night game drive and saw a couple deer.

    image

Overall, not a very successful night.

  • Little Birds

    This is a cattle tyrant

    image

It has a yellow belly and a grey head.

    image

    Just like this king bird

    image

    And this great kiskadee

    image

I think the bird naming people are mocking us

    image

    This is a mockingbird

    image

    He didn’t seem very happy.

    image

    Now who’s head is this?

    image

It could be this rufous hornero

    image

Or it could be one of the birds above, I really don’t remember.

    image

The colourful birds are more memorable

    image

Than these boring yellow and brown ones

    image

But they’re too quick to get good pictures of

    image

Ugly birds are better at sitting still.
