This is the temple of the skulls. It has skulls carved at the top.

Kerri is up high

This aquaduct brought water from the mountains

This is an unmemorable building

This is a good view from the tall temple of the cross

But the picture of Kerri at the top of the temple of the cross is facing the unmemorable building

OK fine, a lot of the buildings aren’t that memorable

This one is mostly memorable for climbing its steep stairs.

The ruins of Palenque are hidden in the jungle

And you can only see the bits that have been excavated through the trees.

They have a lot of intricate carvings in the sheltered areas, but those are pretty dark.

They’re also at the tops of the temples, so you have to climb all the stairs to see them.

Most of the carvings are writing, and most of the writing is dates.

Most of the buildings have these weird comb things on the roof

But most of the comb thingies are falling apart.

It’s a lot of stairs

The priests must have been in good shape.

I don’t think I can tell you what’s going on here. The girls would probably be amused, but readers with dangly bits tend not to like talking about stabbing them with sharp objects.

They didn’t even drink the water in the canals, they brought bottled spring water down from the mountains for drinking. This is just for washing.

There were big leaves in the jungle around Palenque

There was also the old aquaduct

Which our guide convinced Matt to walk down into

It was dark

And full of bats

Lots of bats

He came back out through that little triangle without even getting his shoes wet

This is an artificial Mayan pool

The guide insisted on pouring water over Kerri’s head for some reason

There was lots of fungi in the jungle

Some were spikey

Some were not

There were lots of ruins

The guide painted Matt’s face in a way that may or may not actually be traditional.
