  • Milan Duomo

Here is a very gothic style building.

    image

There are many carvings all over the outside, including this webbed foot long necked dinosaur?

    image

And this super long necked dragon.

    image

    And locusts.

    image

    And chicken dragon?

    image

And beheadings, who doesn’t like a good beheading?

    image

I can understand why touching Jesus’s leg might be lucky, but the guy whipping him? Why are people rubbing that?

    image

David is fighting the lion without even waking up the pigeon on his head.

    image

Even in stone they try to shoo away the pigeons.

    image

I don’t really have words for this one.

    image

The gargoyles were lions with cannon mouths that you carry over your shoulder.

    image

Matt says they probably weren’t like that to begin with and they added the tubes to extend where the water fell.

    image

Sometimes the statues helped by opening their mouths more so they could fit the tubes in.

    image

This is just a pretty window, because we don’t want to end on something so violent.

  • Basilica of Sant’ Ambrogio

This is a column that saved Saint Ambrose from the devil. See the horn marks. Kerri is much taller than the devil.

    image

This is one of the oldest basilicas in Italy.

    image

Considering its age it is pretty fancy inside.

    image

Ambrose along with two others are relics of the basilica.

    image

Unlike many relics they don’t cover the face at all. He had pretty healthy teeth for the 4th century.

    image

There are nice mosaics and carvings throughout.

    image

This is THE snake that cured all the wandering Israelites in the desert. Moses was also thousands of years ahead of his time in both artistic style and technology.

    image

There were some happy sheep and wolves? looking down on the benches.

    image

The pulpit was pretty elaborately carved. No idea what the scene is though. We don’t remember any tiny flying horses.

  • Milan Duomo Roof

We could climb up the Duomo and actually wander quite a bit on the roof of the building.

    image

    It went up even higher.

    image

It was pretty cool to see all the architecture up close.

    image

The view was cool and not really sure what that building is off in the distance. It looks a little strange like they decided they wanted to build wider about halfway up.

  • Milan Duomo Ruins

Like everything in Europe the old things we visit now as tourist attractions are built on top of even older ruins and when they find these we pay more to see them too.

    image

This was the site of the baptismal font just in front of the duomo which is now under the stairs and piazza.

    image

They found quite a few artefacts from that time including coins. They probably weren’t tossed into the baptism font, but who knows maybe people liked throwing money into pools of water in ancient times too.
