  • Vervet Monkey Invasion

Our campsite at Lake Mburo was taken over by vervet monkeys.

    image

They can reach quite high when they stand on their back legs.

    image

    And they are watching you.

    image

    They have big feet.

    image

    And lots of fur.

    image

    The babies are particularly cute.

    image

The young ones are still cute.

    image

    The adults are more threatening.

    image

Especially when they are carrying their babies.

    image

The babies have to cling on tightly because mom doesn’t have any extra hands to hold them.

    image

They enjoyed the view from on top of the roof.

    image

They look very scary when they yawn.

  • Warthogs

    Warthogs are funny looking animals.

    image

They are also quite dumb and will only run away from things for about 30 seconds before forgetting why they were running and they begin eating again.

    image

They have to bend down on their elbows to eat.

    image

    They are very ugly.

    image

Sometimes it gets too hot even for warthogs.

    image

    Even the babies are ugly.

    image

OK they are a little cute.

  • Evening Hippopotamuses

Our campsite tonight was being surrounded by hippos. They were far away when we got there but walked closer as night fell.

    image

As a side note these plants that look like they are from Dr. Seuss are papyrus reeds.

    image

Back to the hippos. They are much more active in the evening.

    image

As it got dark they got tired and started yawning.

    image

    Which is kind of scary.

    Lots and lots of yawning.

    image

Okay maybe it was more a sign of strength as this is a bit excessive to be called a yawn.

  • Kenyan Feast

This is Juma our cook for the first leg of the tour.

    image_thumb[2]

These are the primary ingredients for most of our dinners.

We are on a rotation to help cook, which means chopping up the veggies.

    image_thumb[1]

Here are some of the dishes we get for dinner.

    image

These are cooked green bananas in a tomato sauce.

    image

This is chipata, which tastes a little like strudel.

    image

This is a traditional Kenyan stew.

    image

    Here’s the cooked spinach.

    image

This is ugali which is a corn flour “bread” that you eat the stew with after forming it into a little scoop.

    image

    Like this.

Juma is a great cook and we were not going to lose any weight on this trip.
