  • Daintree Rainforest

North of Cairns is the Daintree rainforest. There were many very large spiders in the forest.

    image

Being a large forest there were many trees and this was the bark of a giant palm.

    image

There were several types of vines growing on many of the trees.

    image

There were also several other plants that grow on top of the branches of host trees.

    image

There was also wild nutmeg but the pods weren’t ripe yet.

Here’s another one of the large spiders.

    They have pretty big jaws.

  • Cathedral Fig Tree

The Cathedral Fig tree is much, much taller than Matt.

    image

It started as a little seed on top of another giant tree, then sent roots down to the ground outside of that tree, and strangled it.

    image

And the old tree rotted away, leaving the inside hollow.

    image

There are lots of other ferns and things growing on the fig tree now.

    image

The roots are very thick, but there are still gaps between them.

    image

An there is a hollow in the center you can stand in.

  • Crocodile Hunting

This is where the crocodiles live. Can you see them all?

    image

We went looking for them on a boat where we would be safe.

    image

We got candy as well and Matt was enjoying his while searching for crocs.

    image

Before we found crocs we saw some birds.

    image

    There was the first one.

    image

They blend in really well and wouldn’t have been spotted without being pointed out.

    image

Every croc has a different type of pattern on them.

    image

All the spines and scales help reduce turbulence when stalking prey under the water.

    image

This was was sunning itself as the tide was coming in.

    image

It was slowing getting submerged as the water rose.

Keeping away from the water’s edge in northern Australia is a good idea with all these guys around.
