  • Mount Popa

This temple was up at the top of a mountain.

    image

Which meant climbing a lot of stairs.

    image

    Barefoot.

    image

    Past a lot of monkeys.

    image

And no, those monkeys are not potty trained.

    image

Actually the only available potties are just holes in the ground.

    image

And you are not allowed to wear your shoes to the holes.

    image

    Which is really disgusting.

    image

    But the monkeys are cute.

    image

The temple at the top of the stairs was not terribly impressive.

    image

The main draw is probably the view, but because it was the rainy season that was not so impressive.

    image

When the fog cleared a bit you could see quite a ways.

    image

    Mostly Buddhas. So many Buddhas.

    image

Even the statues seemed pretty unimpressed.

    image

Though there was a happy one too.

    image

It did have some cool dragons guarding it though.

    image

Which didn’t coat the stares in grime. Unlike the monkeys.

  • Bupaya

This is another funny shaped gold coated pagoda by the river.

    image

There was a spot where you could see the gold leaf peeling off and flying away. I suspect there is a good gold panning business going on somewhere downstream.

    image

But the best part is that this temple is guarded by tweedle dee.

    image

    And tweedle dum.

  • Gaw Daw Palin Phaya

This was another huge pyramid temple.

    image

That Matt again did not want to pose in front of for some reason.

    image

It had more Buddhas. These ones seemed to have even longer thumbs than most.

    image

One had really oddly shaped thumbs.

    image

Some of the Buddhas even looked like they were sick of Buddhas.

Playing cards are illegal in Myanmar. They can be confiscated at immigration.

    image

But this temple was decorated with diamonds and hearts.

    image

    And spades.

    image

    And clubs.

    image

And Buddhas. Because there are Buddhas everywhere. Although bringing in items decorated with Buddhas is also illegal.

    image

We are not sure if we broke this law by bringing in an e-reader that contained a library copy of Buddhism for Dummies, which has a Buddha on the cover. But when we entered the country the last book read was Southeast Asia on a Shoestring, so it was not currently being displayed.

  • Manuha Phaya

    This Buddha did not fit.

    image

The pink in the corner is Kerri trying to squeeze past his knee.

    image

His knees weren’t even really in the same room.

    image

He had two neighbouring Buddhas, which were smaller but still huge.

    image

The forth Buddha didn’t even fit sitting up, so he had to lie down.

    image

He was lying much flatter than most reclining Buddhas. But given that the reclining Buddha is supposed to show him dying, this position does seem a bit more realistic than propped up on his arm like he usually is.
