Private Pool

This is our hotel room in Cambodia.

image

It has a fenced backyard with our own private pool.

image

Because the big shared pool out front is for losers that can only afford to pay $40/night instead of $50/night.

The room was huge.

image

So was the bathroom.

image

It had a big bathtub and a clothesline.

image

We did have a small problem because the doors did not seal, allowing uninvited visitors to sneak in.

image

On the full moon that meant a lot of crickets. They started pouring into the room about 8:00PM by the hundreds. Matt ran around with a wet towel swatting them. The entire floor was sticky with cricket guts when he was done.

This is Matt shaking out the towels that we used to block the gap all night.

This is a glass in which Matt caught three crickets last night. There is now only one cricket, and three legs. Apparently crickets are cannibals.

But we had a private pool, so it was totally worth it.

It’s weird, but I’m more impressed by the hotel room than the 800-year-old majesty of Angkor Wat.

    • Angkor Wat was more impressive, but the room was a nicer place to spend time. Angkor looked awesome from a distance and the carvings were great, but it was really crowded and a lot of the site is just empty space. I don’t even think it was my favourite temple in the area.

  2. Wow! After seeing the private pool and palatial hotel suite for $50/day I started calculating how much money it would take for me to retire in Cambodia starting this minute. For some inexplicable reason the picture of the cannibalized crickets put a biggish dent in my retirement plans.

  3. Unfortunately the $50/night is probably a rainy season special, and probably also because it’s brand new. It’s also a malaria and dengue risk area, and the health care sucks. So probably not the best retirement plan.

  4. I don’t think I need the name of the hotel after all. My cricket tolerance is only around 2 or 3.

    • Just make sure to plug under the door with a towel if it’s a full moon. Actually you probably want to do that no matter what hotel you are in.
