  • Bagan

The city of Bagan is in the central region of Myanmar and contains hundreds of pagodas from the 11th to 13th century.

    image

What it looks like is that there are an endless number of pagodas that stretch on and on.

    image

They are all brick and most have stood up quite well despite a large earthquake that virtually destroyed the old city in 1975.

    image

Obviously some have been restored more than others.

    image

When you get up higher it looks really interesting with all the peaks jutting out of the forest below.

    image

Every one has a slightly different design.

    image

Some are the original brick colour, while others are painted.

    image

There were a couple you could climb to get a better view, or try to see the sunrise or set.

    image

We went up twice and it was nice to just sit in the quiet.

    image

Some where built more like monuments with no entrances just stairs up to the upper areas.

    image

We weren’t the only ones watching the sunset, so we could get help for a picture.

    image

    So many pagodas.

    image

Every time we went to one there would be 3 more behind it.

    image

They also turned golden in the sunset which was really nice.

  • Mahabodhi Temple

This temple was built in 1215 by another king with another name I can’t pronounce.

    image

The pyramid is 140 feet tall.

    image

The lion on the left has the strangest feet yet.

    image

Though the one on the right comes close.

    image

Every little nook on the pyramid is filled with Buddhas.

    image

Supposedly every one is in a different position, but the differences must be subtle.

    image

Actually anywhere on the entire temple you could possibly fit a Buddha has a Buddha.

    image

    There is even a superbuddha.

    image

The buddhas inside are covered with gold leaf.

    image

And the biggest one inside has blinky lights. This shrine is presumably for expert meditators only.

    image

Overall it was a lot of Buddhas.

  • First Temple

Our first day in Bagan started really early with the overnight bus arriving at 5 am. We went to the hotel and slept for a few hours then went out to this amazing area.

    image

Some pagodas can be climbed, although the pathways are built for people a little smaller than us.

    image

    Everything here is brick.

    image

Most temples date from 11C – 12C AD.

    image

All the temples here are Buddhist. This is the original painting from the 12C AD.

    image

This was not the original painting but someone’s drawing.

    image

This guardian was missing half a head.

    image

    And there are many pagodas.

    image

In every direction you look and for as far as you see.

  • Shwedagon Pagoda

Shwedagon Pagoda can be seen from all over Yangon. It is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist Temples.

    image

Which is why we were not expecting it to feel so much like Vegas when we entered. There’s something about an escalator to a pilgrimage site that makes it feel like cheating.

Of course in Vegas they let you wear shoes on the escalators.

    image

Once we got to the top it was all shiny marble and gold plating.

    image

    Tons and tons of gold.

    image

I think this is supposed to contain one of the Buddha’s hairs.

    image

And this is his footprint. It’s over two feet long and it’s not even actually an imprint, it’s more like a sculpture of a foot. It’s more like what a prankster would use to make Buddha footprints in the woods than like a footprint.

    image

    There were lots of Buddhas

    image

And nearly as many bright scrolling lights as Vegas.

    image

Also nearly as many boxes to put your money in. And an even lower chance of getting money out of them!

    image

If you don’t have enough money to put in the boxes these guys will help you out.

    image

And if you want to stream Netflix during your pilgrimage these guys would help you out.

    image

Hey, they have to pay for all this gold somehow.

    image

It’s not like it’s solid gold anyway. There are 5448 diamonds, 2317 rubies, sapphires, and other gems up there somewhere. And one of those diamonds is 76 carats.

    image

Really, they only used 21841 gold bars to plate the 110m tall main pagoda.

    image

That’s a lot of gold ($335 million US), but it’s certainly not enough to make the 110 meter pagoda out of.

    image

This scale model is solid gold though.
