  • Amman Archaeological Museum

The oldest human statues in the world were found in Amman. They are 7500 years old. The shapes were made out of reed and then covered in plaster. They think the lack of detail between the head and the feet might be because the statue used to wear clothes.

    image

This one is weird because it has two heads.

    image

The black on the eyes is bitumen from the Dead Sea. Which is a long walk from Amman.

    image

They also covered the skulls of the dead with plaster and put shells in their eyes.

    image

These coffins came much later and were probably inspired by the Egyptian sarcophagus. They had a representation of the face on top, you can barely see the nose sticking out now.

    image

This is the dead sea scroll that was made out of bronze. It is basically an ancient treasure map.

    image

It didn’t last very well. It corroded and couldn’t be unrolled, and most of the letters are hard to read.

    image

But the papyrus isn’t much better. This is some document about the rules of the community.

    image

And the parchment has bigger intact chunks but also more chunks missing. This is a pesser, which is kind of a written version of a sermon.

image You should definitely carve things into stone if you want them to be readable 2000 years later.

  • Cedar Pride Wreck

Our second dive was a wreck dive.

    image

It was sunk 30 years ago after sitting in port for years.

    image

Since it is only 30 years old there is only a little bit of stuff growing on it.

    image

Parts of it were kind of cool though.

    image

Not that many fish around but several small corals and grasses.

    image

The wreck wasn’t too deep and bottomed out at 25 meters.

    image

Even so there wasn’t much colour.

    image

The ship was laying on its port side so this is looking back up towards the surface.

    image

Here’s a good example of all the small corals starting to grow on the side of the ship.

    image

This prop isn’t turning anymore. The urchins around it are happy about that.

    image

The ship was interesting to see.

    image

It looks a bit spooky looking down the stairs into the ship.

    image

There were a couple fish around we haven’t really seen many before.

    image

This guy looks like a triangular box, even though we didn’t get a good angle on it.

    image

There were many lionfish around, including inside the ship hanging out.

    image

Here’s another really long fish that we never manage to get a picture of from another angle.

    image

The pufferfish wasn’t happy with our dive master.

    image

They do look pretty funny puffed up.

  • Red Sea Scuba

We made it to the Red Sea and since we were there we couldn’t skip the chance to dive.

    image

There were many of these mounds around but we forgot to ask what they might be.

    image

There are power cables that run from Egypt to Jordan because Jordan buys power.

    image

It is quite the setup underneath the water.

    image

Even though we didn’t get that far into the sea and were mainly still in the gulf it was quite pretty.

    image

There were quite a few similar looking fish and corals.

    image

There were a few more sponges then we’d seen before.

    image

The orange fish are back though.

    image

This guy wasn’t blending in all too well.

    image

If he moved back a bit into the rocks it may have been a better hiding spot.

    image

This is a remora and our divemaster for this dive.

    image

We had never seen them before swimming free.

    image

It kept trying to attach to the tank and then swam all around our dive master looking for a spot to attach. It never did, but followed us for over 10 minutes.

    image

Kerri pointed out a turtle heading right towards up.

    image

It may have seen its reflection in the lens which is why it swam directly at me. I tried not to move too much to disturb it.

    image

In retrospect I have no idea why I didn’t hold down the shutter because it was super cool how close it got. I just froze because I was trying to keep out of its way as it almost swam right into me.

  • Wadi Rum

We went for a drive through the Wadi Rum desert in the back of a pickup truck.

    image

The desert has a lot of cool rocks.

    image

It also has sand, but not enough to run down without worrying about hurting yourself.

    image

Some of the rocks have art on them.

    image

There were lions and camels and oryx and ostriches.

    image

My favourite ostrich is in the second row on the left because you can see his feather duster tail.

    image

There is also a man on horseback hunting with a spear, but that looks newer.

    image

The rocks had really weird textures.

    image

    Overall they looked very lumpy.

    image

There had just been a lot of rain, so there were tiny little sprouts starting to grow out of the sand.

    image

After the ride we spent the night in these tents. We went for a walk in the desert after the sun set and watched the shooting stars. Then we had to go huddle by the fire because we got cold.

  • Maqluba in a Cave

After Petra we went for dinner in a cave. There were lots of caves with lights which were very pretty.

    image

This was the cave we ate in. It was carved out 2000 years ago as a burial chamber.

    image

For dinner we had maqluba, which means upside down. Because it is made upside down in the pot and then dumped over to serve.

    image

A chicken is put on the bottom of the pot cut into quarters. This was covered with eggplant and potato cut into quarter inch slices, and then 2.5kg of rice. And is made with 1.5 spoons magruba seasoning from Saudi Arabia, which includes sage, cardamom, nutmeg and maybe thyme and tumeric and salt and pepper.
They sprinkled fresh parsley on top after flipping.

    image

There were some other saucy things to eat with pitas.

    image

    And desert.

    image

And after dinner there was dancing.
