This is the big church in Cuenca.
It looks a lot better from the front than from the back.
This church in Banos was not meant to be viewed from above. This seems like poor planning because it is completely surrounded by mountains.
The locals believe that the Virgin Mary is protecting the town from the volcano, and thus this church is dedicated entirely to Mary, with Mary on the main altar instead of Jesus.
Around the outside of the church are paintings depicting the miracles they believe Mary performed to protect the city. Here are a few of them.
The text was in Spanish, but we think we got the jist of it. Of course we forgot to actually look up the translations for over a year, so we’re only finding out if we were right now.

At this point Kerri got tired of typing up the text and translating them. And very depressed because Spanish lessons were clearly a waste of time. Fortunately Matt’s super translation powers don’t require actually being able to read the text. So he translated the rest all by himself.
On a day the volcano began erupting and the lava flow threatened to destroy some land, or prevent the river from running. The people called out to the Water Saint and the volcano failed to destroy everything. They rejoiced.
Someone was likely sick and the woman pictured prayed and the sick person got better.
People dug the ground and either were happy they found something or started to build something with the blessings of the Water Saint.
A rampaging bull was stopped by praying to the Water Saint and calmed the animal.

I think you might have an idea the general plot by this point. Problem (in this case fire)—pray—not so much damage or injury—jubilation.

Directly across from this painting thanking Mary for saving them from a fire is the likely cause of the next fire. It was really quite hot in this back room and had giant vents for the smoke and heat.
At the money museum in Ecuador Kerri was rich beyond her wildest dreams.
Matt was less more practical, trying to figure out how to fit the bills into his wallet.
There were lots of old coins.
The mountain goes up to 4696 meters.
But we were feeling sick and only made it a bit past 4050m.
And Quito is already at 2850m.
And we took the gondola to 3,945m.
So we really only climbed a bit over 100m.
There is a church at the top, because this is Ecuador.
And a kid spraying Mardi Gras foam.
There seemed to be practically vertical farms on the other mountains.
Matt gave Kerri a flower for Valentine’s Day, because he’s super romantic.
This is a Carunculated caracara.
Which sounds even funnier than chicken-hawk, which is what we were calling it.
It is closer to a hawk than a chicken. It is a falcon. Which is why it flew away when Kerri chased it with the camera.
This is a millipede.
Look at all of those legs.
We climbed to the top of the Basilica to see Quito from above.
The stairs were built for short people and a bit maddening.
This is the space between the curved ceiling inside the church and the pointed roof.
At the end of that we still had to go further up.
And then further up on the outside.
This is the inside of the clocks in the tower.
The view at the top was spectacular.
That is the hill with the statue of the Virgin Mary on top.
They have police stationed at the bottom of the hill warning tourists not to climb it to see the statue because they will get robbed.
We decided to admire it from afar.
Which with Zoom meant we could still get a pretty good look.
