  • Random Bits of Croatia

Croatia was covered in the remains of houses and churches that had been abandoned by the Serbs during the war and vandalized or destroyed. The graffiti reads “for sale”. The phone number probably doesn’t belong to the owner.

This castle was being guarded by transformers for some reason.

  • Sibenik

We stopped to see one of the rarest things on earth, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is closed to tourists. It is on the tourist map, there are giant attraction signs everywhere leading you to it, but when you get there it is for worshippers only.

    image

You can see the outside, but it is pretty boring limestone blocks. Except for this side door that has some carvings. For some reason Adam is covering his nipples but Eve is not.

    image

The backside is particularly unspectacular. It is under renovation, but I think it would be pretty boring anyway.

    image

The rest of the town is pretty. There is an old fort at the top of the hill.

    image

The Cathedral may have been the least attractive thing there.

  • Plitvice Winter

There were weird splashed of green throughout the park.

    image_thumb2

We were not the only things in denial that it was winter.

    image_thumb23

Some plants were still trying to flower.

    image_thumb6

Spiders were lost in the snow.

    image_thumb15

    Ducks were walking on water.

    image_thumb10

And trying to figure out why they didn’t migrate.

    image_thumb11111

And huddling to avoid the cold.

    image_thumb7

    These are not good snowshoes.

    image_thumb9

They were gathered around the small passage through the lake that was broken by the ferry.

    image_thumb12

The ferry had to break new ice every time it passed.

    image_thumb19

In the wider part of the lake there was a bigger unfrozen gap.

    image_thumb20

But the ducks don’t like it here because there are no tourists to feed them.

    image_thumb211

This is a waterfall in the summer.

    image_thumb22

We went in search of more waterfalls and on that path we found trees frozen to the lake.

    image_thumb24

    It was warming up

  • Plitvice Snowman

We tried to climb all the way to the upper waterfalls, but soon we were the only ones and having to break through fresh snow.

    image_thumb25

We decided it was time to turn around and build a gravity assisted snowman.

    image_thumb26

Gravity was less helpful than we thought it would be.

    image_thumb14

    It was hard work.

    image_thumb27

By the time we finished even the snowman was exhausted and had to lie down.

    image_thumb5

When we got here no one had walked up this path.

    image_thumb1

Kerri innocently lied down for a nap with him.

    image_thumb21

But the snowman threw a snowball at Matt, and she got blamed.

    image_thumb3

Then we all hugged and made up.

  • Plitvice

We woke up to go for a hike and all we could see is this.

    image

    It was everywhere.

    image

But Matt pulled Kerri out of bed and drove to the park anyway.

    image

But the roads in the park were closed.

    image

The waterfalls were impressive, but the white water on a white background makes the pictures not so great.

    image

The water that is still liquid stands out nicely though.

    image

    The water was very clear.

    image

Matt was evil and threw snowballs at Kerri whenever she grabbed the camera, so there aren’t many more pictures of the waterfalls.

    image

    Kerri threw them at herself.

    image

Then Matt threw them at the lake.

    image

There is another picture of the waterfalls after all!
