  • Australian Zoo: Lemurs

Newly added to the zoo was an open lemur island. We walked all the way around without seeing any. Just as we were about to leave they all leaped by near the exit.

    image

It was pretty cool to see them hop from tree to tree.

    image

We tried to get some pictures of them in motion but they are too quick.

    image

They weren’t too fast all the time.

    image

But much of the time was spent leaping from tree to tree.

    image

You wouldn’t think that stripped tail camouflages well but it really does.

    image

    Not in this shot though.

  • Australian Zoo: Birds

The Australian Zoo had lots of birds.

    image

Most of them did not belong in Australia.

    image

    But they were pretty anyway.

    image

This black cockatoo does belong here.

    image

So does this emu. Australian birds tend to have weird hair.

    image

This is why you don’t mess with emus.

    image

These eagles are also native. We saw all kinds of them flying around Australia.

    image

    They are pretty birds.

    image

    And not at all scary.

    image

They look sleeker without their neck feathers ruffled.

imageThis is a considerably better picture of a condor than we managed to get in South America. They should really train the wild ones to pose for the camera.

    image

This is a hawk owl, which doesn’t have a flat face like most owls.

imageTheir cassowaries were sitting down, which looks really funny with their legs sticking out.

    image

These weird turkey things were mostly wild.

    image

    This is a kookaburra.

    image

They sit on the power lines and make really crazy cackling noises.

    image

This is a bush stone curlew.

    image

He has ridiculously long legs, which look funny when it sits down.

    image

He doesn’t even wade with them, he lives in the bush eating bugs and reptiles and seeds.

    image

    These turkey things were wild.

    image

And looked really funny digging nests.

    image

The ibises are awfully big to be stealing scraps from tables.

    image

This guy is very small and cute.

  • Australian Zoo: Koalas

We have seen lots of koalas in sanctuaries and in the wild, but this was our last chance before leaving Australia.

    image

Their leaves were being changed so they were doing a bit more than just sleeping.

    image

There were a few different types of eucalypt leaves being brought in and they were interested in specific ones.

    image

Sometimes enough to climb right over each other.

    image

We also went to the hospital and this was a skull with a facial tumour.

    image

There were also some sleeping ones in the walkthrough area.

    image

Most importantly of all Kerri finally got to cuddle a koala.

    image

Matt got to join in too but Kerri was the primary cuddler.
