  • Finding the Glacier

We followed the little ice breadcrumbs

    image

    Toward the glacier

    image[8]

OK we paid a bus to drive us to the glacier

    image[11]

But the bus driver was definitely navigating by ice breadcrumbs.

    image

    We found the glacier.

    image

    It was big.

    image

It’s big when we’re not in front of it too.

    image

There’s a narrow part over here that sometimes gets blocked with ice and makes the lake level rise.

    image

But that hasn’t happened in a long time.

    image

    The glacier was very noisy.

    image

It made a lot of creaking and cracking noises.

    image

Lots of chunks fell off of it.

    image

But we didn’t catch any on camera.

    image

We did get the waves from a chunk that fell off the bottom and floated up to the top though.

    image

    It was also noisy.

    image

The easiest thing to catch on camera was us.

    image

We have a lot of glacier selfies.

  • Above the Glacier

We climbed up to the waterfall.

    image

From up there you could really see how dirty Matt’s whiskey rocks were.

    image

Kerri was not sorry she refused to drink the fresh glacier water.

    image

The waterfall was not as impressive as Iguazu

    image

But we took a selfie anyway

    image

The views back at the glacier were nicer.

    image

Although there were some pretty flowers up there.

    image

We walked back to the foot of the glacier.

    image

    Which was still very icy.

    image

There’s no ice outside the glacier because it’s summer

    image

Except for the little icebergs that float to the other shore.

    image

There were a lot of them.

  • Under the Glacier

See where the waterfall goes under the glacier?

    image

    It makes a cave.

    image

    Big enough to crawl inside.

    image

It was pretty wet in there.

    image

Melting glaciers make a lot of water.

    image

    It was also very blue.

    image

Because only the blue light gets through.

    image

Everything white glowed like it was under a black light.

    image

Some of the ice was pointy.

    image

It was more clear than the top of the glacier

    image

It’s real ice not just packed snow.

  • Walking On the Glacier

    We left the waterfall

    image

And went for a walk on the glacier

    image

    There was ice everywhere.

    image

Our guide had to carve us a trail with a pick axe

    image

And we had to step across crevasses

    image

    Which were very deep.

    image

    And climb up hills

    image

Our guide didn’t have a planned route because the glacier changes every night

    image

So we were stuck in this area for a while.

    image

So you’re going to see a lot of pictures of this blue hunk of ice with two blue cracks in it.

    image

Because there wasn’t much else to take pictures of.

    image

There was ice in every direction.

    image

But that hunk was the most attractive.

    image

    Other than Matt of course

    image

    Matt walked towards it.

    image

    So did Kerri.

    image

    She got some help.

    image

    Matt got some help too.

    image

    But we made it.

    image

The hunk is even prettier with a mountain behind it.

  • Walking to the Glacier

Next we had to walk to get to the glacier.

    image

There was a lot of ice in the water.

    image

It looked like you could just hop on the icebergs to get there.

    image

But for some reason that’s not the way the guide took us.

    image

So we decided to follow him.

    image

    Ice is very heavy.

    image

And there was lots of it.

    image

We kept walking along the shore

    image

And got closer to the big glacier

    image

Which was much bigger than us

    image

    And we walked closer

    image

Until we were right next to it.

    image

And we could see the big blue cracks

    image

And the tiny people walking on it.

    image

    And the dirt

    image

And the rocks that had been all scraped up by the glacier.

    image

Look at all those crazy people walking over that cave

    image

The cave is bigger than Matt!

    image

The ice underneath is very blue

    image

    And wet

    image

The ice was in big chunks

    image

    That needed to be poked.

    image

    We walked some more.

    image

Until we got to the waterfall

    image

    Next to the glacier.
