Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees live in the forest eating figs.

image

They are hard to see from the ground when they are up in the fig trees eating.

image

But with binoculars you can find them.

image

But mostly they were just busy eating and didn’t care about us.

image

The males were done eating for the day and were down on the ground sleeping much closer to us.

image

And grooming each other.

image

There were old ones.

image

And younger ones.

image

They were mainly lying around trying to take a nap after a busy morning of eating.

image

They were interested in what we were up to as well.

image

But not enough to do much more than yawn and lay around.

image

It really is a lot of work being a chimpanzee.

image

They have really big mouths.

image

It can look scary but it is just a big yawn.

image

Still we would not want to ever be on the bad side of a chimp.

image

More likely just join in the nap session.

image

Or just relax in the forest as it was pretty hot out.

image

The facial differences are quite interesting and the guides can tell who is who.

image

Most have a good temperament.

image

Like this guy.

image

There is one that you have to look out for. This is not him.

image

This guy was mainly yawning often.

image

These two were grooming almost the whole time we were there.

image

They groom all over, even behind the knees.

image

Their nails stay quite short with all the climbing and walking around.

image

Their nails look cleaner than ours sometimes and they are walking around in the dirt most of the time.

image

This chimp was easy to identify because he had a damaged eye, or a cataract. We couldn’t tell from where we were.

image

This ones eyes were fine and look around at all the stuff going on, including all us tourists.

image

This female had a red bum because she was ready to mate.

image

This caused a fight between the males which was very exciting. Sorry for the lack of videography skills.
