Premium Features & Solutions

Cast Iron Plant earns its name. It handles the conditions that defeat most plants — deep shade, dry soil, low humidity, inconsistent watering, and even indoor neglect. Whether you're filling a dark corner of your living room, covering a shady slope, or dressing up a covered patio, this plant delivers without demanding anything in return.

Use it as a bold indoor statement plant, a mass groundcover under tree canopies, a container specimen for shaded patios, or a refined border plant in those frustrating low-light garden zones. It sends up new shoots each season, gradually building into a full, lush specimen that only gets better with age.

Choose Your Size: The 1-gallon is our best value — landscape-ready, fast to establish, and ideal for mass plantings and Fill My Box orders. The 3-gallon delivers a larger, more mature specimen for immediate visual impact in containers, focal points, and statement shade plantings.

Smart Growing Guide

Beginner Guide — Click to Expand
  1. Choose a shady spot — under trees, on a north-facing wall, or in a low-light room indoors.
  2. For outdoor planting: dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. Backfill with native soil and water deeply.
  3. For indoor planting: use a well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage holes. Avoid soggy soil.
  4. Water once a week outdoors during establishment (first 4–6 weeks), then only during dry spells.
  5. Indoors, water every 1–2 weeks and let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings.
  6. Add 2–3" of mulch around outdoor plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  7. Trim any damaged leaves in early spring to keep the plant looking its best.
Advanced Guide — Click to Expand
  • Soil pH: 5.5–7.0; tolerates clay, compacted, and poor soils with ease.
  • Fertilize once in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10). Avoid over-fertilizing — it's a slow, steady grower.
  • For mass planting, space 18–24" apart for a dense groundcover effect; 24–30" for a more open, naturalistic look.
  • Excellent for rain gardens and low spots — handles periodic wet feet better than most shade perennials.
  • Indoors: bright indirect light maximizes growth rate, but it genuinely thrives in low light. Avoid direct sun, which scorches leaves.
  • Division is easy in early spring — dig and separate clumps every 3–5 years to propagate or refresh planting beds.
  • Cold hardy to Zone 4 — one of the most cold-tolerant shade perennials available.

Pro Tips for Maximum Impact

  • Mass plant 6–12 one-gallon plants under a tree canopy for a dramatic, no-maintenance groundcover — use the Fill My Box discount to save big.
  • Pair with Hostas and Ferns for a layered shade garden with contrasting textures and year-round interest.
  • Use 3-gallon specimens as anchor plants in large containers on covered patios — they handle the low-light and inconsistent watering that kills most patio plants.
  • Mulch heavily at planting to lock in moisture and dramatically speed up establishment.
  • Order your Fill My Box quantity now — the 1-gallon is our highest-inventory size and the best per-plant value for large plantings.

A: Both are the same premium Cast Iron Plant genetics grown right here at The Plant Factory. The 1-gallon is our best value — landscape-ready and ideal for mass plantings and Fill My Box orders. Q: What is a Cast Iron Plant?
A: It's a tough, shade-tolerant evergreen perennial prized for its long, deep-green leaves and ability to handle low light and inconsistent watering. The botanical name is Aspidistra elatior, and it's used as both an indoor foliage plant and a durable outdoor groundcover in shaded areas.

Q: Can it grow indoors?
A: Absolutely — it's one of the best indoor plants available. It thrives in low-light offices and homes, needs watering only every 1–2 weeks, and tolerates the dry air of heated or air-conditioned spaces with ease.

Q: Is Cast Iron Plant toxic to cats or dogs?
A: Cast Iron Plant is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a great choice for pet-friendly homes and gardens. As always, discourage pets from chewing on any plant material.

Q: Is it truly deer resistant?
A: Yes — deer consistently avoid Cast Iron Plant, making it one of the most reliable deer-resistant shade perennials available.

Q: What zones does it grow in?
A: Zones 4–9 — one of the widest cold-hardiness ranges of any shade perennial. It handles both cold winters and hot, humid summers.

Q: How fast does it grow?
A: Growth rate is moderate. It sends up new shoots each season and gradually builds into a full, lush specimen. The 3-gallon gives you a head start if you want immediate size.

Q: Can I grow it in a container on my patio?
A: Yes — it's one of the best container plants for shaded patios and covered decks. It handles inconsistent watering and low light far better than most patio plants.

Q: How many should I order for a groundcover planting?
A: For a dense groundcover, space 1-gallon plants 18–24" apart. Use the Fill My Box tiered savings to get the best price when ordering 4–6+ plants for a border or under-tree planting.

A complete gym in your pocket.
Color: Assorted
Simple but effective. I'm able to pack these into almost anywhere and use them as a mini gym wherever I go. With a little creativity, they can be used to add resistance to almost any exercise. I use them for stretches, face pulls, bicep curls, and even with squats. 5 different resistance levels means you can mix and match to find the perfect resistance for whatever you're doing. I've had mine a couple of months now and have noticed no difference in elasticity or resistance, and I use them almost every day. Would definitely recommend as a portable resistance device and would definitely buy again.

A lot of comfort for a very inexpensive price
Style: 18", Color: Grey, Size: Twin
We needed a spare mattress, but didn’t want to have a dedicated spare bedroom but wanted a comfortable bed. Couldn’t afford these high priced mattresses these days like the air beds or luxury coil spring with gel which are thousands of dollars. Miss air mattresses, very comfortable and adorable and I like the flocked top on it. And it has the self inflatable pump which is very easy and inconvenient. This makes a very inexpensive alternative. Even if it only lasts 6 months or so you can buy a whole lot of these for a lot less money than thousands of dollars for the other beds. In tax is a wonderful brand. I’ve bought it many times. Their vinyl material is very thick and durable. Intex makes flotation devices, blowup rafts, beach floaties, Kayaks, etc. They have an excellent product & know what they’re doing.

Very good

I recently purchased this inflatable mattress from Amazon, and I’m honestly very impressed with the quality and comfort. It inflated quickly and was very easy to set up. The material feels durable and strong, and the mattress stayed fully inflated throughout the entire night without losing a

Skeptical at first, but after first use (so far) it’s a solid product
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
I initially bought this to stay at my MIL’s senior community (to help her get settled), so I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it and I planned to leave it for other relatives that might want to visit. I expected it to be cheap-ish quality and probably not last through my two week stay. First off, set up was a breeze. I laid it out and started inflation and it took about 4-5 minutes to fully inflate. The motor made noise, but it’s to be expected from something like this—I can say that it wasn’t as noisy as our Costco-bought mattress. Second, it’s big—but that’s not a bad thing as much as I thought anyway after I saw it fully inflated. Turns out, for me, it’s a good thing. Our Costco mattress sits low to the floor and as it deflates a bit during the night, it’s tough to get up. This one (the 22” model and the largest one at this writing) is wonderful as I can sit on the edge of it and stand up easily. Your experience may be different, but for older folks it makes it really easy to get out of bed in the morning. How does it sleep? Well, since I was visiting by myself and my significant other wasn’t with me, I can only speak for a single sleeper. It was really comfortable! It did take a bit of tweaking though as I thought I would like it more firm as I like to side sleep. The first couple of nights were a bit rough as I tossed and turned a bit in my sleep—I found that I couldn’t get comfortable on my side. For the reviews that say that it deflates after sleeping on it, I can say that it did seem to lose some air after the first two nights. The manufacturer does state that it does “stretch” and not deflate. As I wanted to test that statement, I didn’t change the firmness of it by re-inflating it to where I had it. The third and fourth nights were better sleep and I didn’t feel like the mattress deflated at all, so I found the stretch statement to be valid—it wasn’t losing air. After that night, I re-inflated it to where I thought I’d like it. The next night was the same tossing and turning that I had those first two nights, so I concluded that I needed to make it less firm and I actually DEflated it a bit and for the rest of the stay it was perfect! I didn’t have to touch it and I even unplugged it. When I was getting ready to leave, I started the deflation process by turning the dial in the opposite direction. It took longer to deflate, so I walked away for a bit—I’d guess about 7-8 minutes. When I came back the mattress was flat as a pancake and ready to fold. This is the only hassle of the process as folding it to get it into the storage bag and back into the box (for storage). I do like the tote that they provide as the handles make it easy to lug about. So, the first use was a success. If repeated uses reveal issues, I’ll report back. I will say that I plan to buy another one to replace our beloved Costco air mattress—she’s showing her age and the height of this one as well as the cost make it a no-brainer to get it as a second. We’ll use this one until it dies (if it even does) and then fall back on our old one if needed. I gave an overall 5 stars for the product with 4 stars for sleep quality and comfort only because your idea of these two might be a bit of a learning experience until you find your inflation sweet spot—so it’s not just an “inflate fully and use” type of scenario.

Leaking mattress 2nd use, Good Warranty Help, Bag not durable
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
UPDATE: first time I slept alone, all was good. Our second week to use, we were past the warranty. Tried to sleep on it with two people and it's deflating. I don't believe it's the weight because it deflates when no one is using it as well. Contacted company, they are very helpful, and I believe you're speaking to someone in the US. You can remove the pump and there's a gasket that you can try to snug up. That did not help so they are shipping a new mattress to me. Removed star because bag already had hole at seam when delivered, and it's not durable. I'll contact the company and update. The bag isn't looking durable. Mattress does seem very durable. Blows up and deflates as expected. It does have a plastically smell when you first inflate, and again when I deflated. I can't complain, it's plastic lol. If smells bother you, just inflate ahead of time in another space. Deflating smell was stronger of two. Again, just deflate in another ventilated space. The mattress didn't continue to smell with use. Make sure you have deep pocket sheets. There is no indent for the bottom of the elastic to go around. I only had to fix them once in 8 nights. I slept alone, so I can't say how it would be with two. I'll update when we sleep on our with two people. But I found it very firm and comfortable. I've been having some back & neck pain. It didn't cause any problems. Might have to add some air 2nd night as the mattress might stretch a bit first time using. Found it to be true queen size. Cord/plug a little tricky to store back in the compartment within mattress. Does take some time to deflat. It folds easily and compact, but I'll have to figure out the configuration of exactly how to fold it to get it to fit into the bag once I get a replacement. I believe you'll need two people to get it in the bag. It's heavier than the thinner mattresses. So much nicer having the higher height, especially if you're going to sleep on it for more than one night. I think I went with the 22".
