Sometimes a mysterious plant has a wonderful story behind it. This particular Philodendron stood for a long time on our webshop as Philodendron Specie Black, because the correct name was missing. Thanks to the help of a dedicated customer, this has now changed. With his knowledge and efforts, we found out that this tropical beauty is officially known as Philodendron subhastatum Tamarindo. We are extremely grateful to him for this.

Origin

The Philodendron subhastatum is a climbing species native to tropical Central and South America. This 'Tamarindo' form is notable for its intense color contrasts and is only sporadically offered in cultivation. The name 'Tamarindo' may come from a local range or from the color tones reminiscent of tamarind fruits.

Characteristics

What makes this variety special is the persistent effect of the red leaf spine. Unlike the more commonly cultivated form, in which the underside of the leaves fades as the plant ages, this 'Tamarindo' retains its deep red underside even into adulthood. This provides a striking visual contrast to the dark green upper surface and makes it popular with serious collectors.

In addition, with proper care, the plant develops firm, slightly elongated leaves with a slightly glossy surface. Its growth habit is climbing, which means it likes to embrace a moss stick or climbing support.

Care

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause leaf damage. It also grows in shade, but more slowly.

Temperature

Ideally between 18 and 28 °C. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C.

Substrate

Use an aerated, well-draining substrate based on, for example, coco, peat and perlite.

Humidity

High humidity (above 60%) is appreciated, especially for preservation of the red underside.

Nutrition

During the growing season (spring-summer), provide the plant monthly with a balanced nutrition for aroids.

Watering

Water when the top 3 to 4 cm of the substrate feels dry. Preferably use demineralized water.

Flowering

Flowering is rare in room conditions. When it does occur, typical aroid inflorescences appear, but the ornamental value is mainly in the foliage.

This Philodendron subhastatum 'Tamarindo' is a jewel for any lover of unusual foliage plants. We are happy to finally share its true name with you - and proud that you, the customer, are part of our growing community of plant connoisseurs.

One Tough Ball!
Color: Blue
Our dogs are loving this ball. Our 1 yr old hound is a world-class chewer and he can't make a dent in this ball. The interactive buzzing and bouncing keeps them entertained for long durations. It's a mite noisy but the barking from the 1 yr old is much louder, lol. Even turned off, they like playing with it and chewing on it. Based on the tough construction, we think it will last much longer than traditional chew balls.

If you love your dog…don’t buy this.
Color: Orange
We have a nonaggressive English cocker. She opened the ball every time she played with it. And yes, we are closing it as hard as we can. I do not recommend this toy for any dog! This is a dangerous toy for a dog that is not supervised.
