Sambucus nigra is oftentimes sold as a dietary supplement and has long been used in herbal medicine. Sambucus nigra seeds require a period of cold stratification in order to germinate reliably. Soak the seeds for 3 days in room temperature water. After soaking the seeds, wrap the seeds in a moist, but not soaking wet, paper towel and seal in an airtight plastic bag. Place the bag in a refrigerator for 3 months. After the period of cold stratification is complete, plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep in a well draining potting soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet between 65°F and 75°F for best results. Seeds typically take 1 to 3 months to germinate, but can take longer. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
