Fujiyama F1 Hybrid Cauliflower grows well in sub-tropical conditions, reaching maturity in around 70 days and showing strong tolerance to heat. Named for Japan’s tallest mountain, each plant forms a bright white curd atop a flat-domed head that measures 6–8 inches across. The leaves partially cover the head, but tying them to "blanch" helps maintain a white color. This variety needs warm weather for proper sizing, matures uniformly, and offers a long shelf life. Its heads are flavorful both cooked and raw, never bland, with a pleasant texture.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Sun: Full sun. In hot climates, plant in a spot that gets full morning sun with afternoon shade.

Water: Keep the soil consistently moist

Fertilizer: Add some all purpose fertilizer into the planting hole when transplanting. Fertilize again every 4 weeks.

When & How To Sow Seeds: For a spring crop, sow seeds indoors, in 4 inch pots, 10-12 weeks before your last spring frost date. Transplant after your last spring frost date. For a fall crop, sow seeds indoors, in 4 inch pots, 10-12 weeks before your target date of planting your fall garden. Hot climate gardeners - search your zipcode on www.plantmaps.com to view a chart with the max average high and low temperatures per month, in your area. Your target date to transplant is the first month in fall where the max average high temperature finally drops to 85F or below. Space cauliflower plants 18 inches apart in rows that are 3FT apart.

Germination: 5-15 days

Days To Maturity: 70 days after transplanting into the garden

How & When To Harvest: Harvest the entire head of cauliflower once it forms and the flower buds are tight and unopened. Once the flower buds start to look like they are seperating, it is time to harvest. That is the biggest size the head of cauliflower will get before it starts bolting (go into the flowering stage). Cut the head of cauliflower off the stem. The plant will not continue producing side shoots like when growing broccoli.

Common Diseases: The most common disease when growing cauliflower is clubroot, which causes swollen roots, wilting, and stunted growth. To manage it, rotate crops, raise soil pH with lime, remove infected plants and keep the garden clean to prevent its spread.

Common Pests: One of the most common pests when growing cauliflower is the cabbage worm, which is green with white stripes down its back. Classic signs of a worm infestation include munched on leaves and finding little green, black, or orange balls which is the frass (poop) of these worms. You can hand pick them off your plants, but if the infestation is severe, spray with an organic worm treatment like Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).

An exceptional five stars out of five
Few qualities separate inordinately successful entrepreneurs from the rest of the pack than the ability to innovate. Many have debated whether individuals are born with this quality or whether it can be nurtured. In The Innovator's DNA, Jeff Dyer, Hal Gregersen and Clayton Christensen explain that while genetics play a role, innovation is most certainly a skill that can be learned. In particular, the authors introduce and expound upon five "discovery skills" found in the leaders of some of the most innovative companies in the world: (1) associating, (2) questioning, (3) observing, (4) networking and (5) experimenting. Each discovery skill is accompanied by real-world examples and pragmatic exercises that make the book unusually valuable in an age where copious books on change, leadership and innovation overwhelm the already-overwhelmed executive. I give The Innovator's DNA an exceptional five stars out of five. The authors present a very readable book and provide concrete exercises for developing innovative skills. Using the principles provided in the book, I created a folder on my computer that I call my "Innovation Room." I use this to track progress as I work through various exercises and as I take time to ponder about how to apply innovative solutions to extant problems in Utah. This book was and will continue to be useful to me, and is recommended as a must-read for those interested in adding rare innovative attributes to their arsenal of problem-solving and decision-making skills. *NOTE: The preceding text is taken verbatim from my short book review printed in the June 2012 edition of Utah Business.

It's Ok
It's an ok book and it definitely has some interesting things going on it, but it also has those "ask yourself" these questions if you can be an innovator which is where every human being ponders and talks themselves into having the type of characterisitic the question asks if they have and that makes that human being feel the best about themselves. Bottom line the book has some good info, is it better than say reading the biography of each innovator that they cover (if one is available)....I can't say that it is.

Super informative and easy to read!
Format: Kindle
Fantastic! I didn't expect a book about taxes and financial planning to be a page turner, but it certainly was. I almost dreaded starting it because this topic is such a headache, but I started and then devoured it in a single day. What I really appreciate is that it went into detail where most books about author business just give mealy mouthed generalizations, not specific to any particular country, and then warn you that their non-advice "does not constitute legal advice." Write It Off actually goes into meaningful detail about the different types of business structures in the U.S. and how to decide which is best for you. The section on deductible expenses made me realize that I've been missing an opportunity to write off a significant expense that I hadn't even considered. The section at the end with a list of helpful expense -tracking and budgeting tools was super helpful too. I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily, but I would definitely recommend this to any creative with a small business. It's not just for authors!
