The Madagascar Palm (Pachypodium lamerei) is a highly distinctive succulent plant known for its striking, palm-like appearance. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm but belongs to the Dogbane family (Apocynaceae). It is a pachycaul (thick-trunked) stem succulent, meaning its swollen, spiny trunk serves as its main water storage organ.
This exotic plant is native to the dry xerophytic forests of southern and southwestern Madagascar, an island off the southeast coast of Africa.
Its most notable feature is its tall, silvery-gray, thick trunk that is densely covered with sharp, triple-grouped spines. This cigar-shaped, succulent stem is topped with a rosette of long, narrow, glossy green leaves, giving it a unique, tropical palm-tree silhouette. The plant may shed its leaves in winter or during prolonged dry periods (semi-deciduous).

Full Sun. This plant craves sunlight. Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
Low Water Needs. Water deeply when the soil is completely dry during the active growing season (spring and summer). Reduce watering significantly, or withhold it entirely, during its winter dormancy, especially if the leaves drop. Overwatering is the biggest threat.
Very Well-Draining Succulent Mix.
Prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C - 29°C). It is not frost-hardy and should be protected from temperatures below 40°F (4°C), which can cause cold damage and leaf drop.

Study and Attractive, but limited space.

I've owned it since Sept 2025 and used it about three times. The Pros are that it's a really rigid purse, like luggage. It doesn't collapse, which probably means it can handle a roughing up. (I'm not hard on my purses.) Another pro is that it's VERY attractive. I got the purple and it was quite elegant.
The cons are that things don't fit into it smoothly. There's a zip pocket in the middle of the purse which is cumbersome. And though it fits a lot, there's a lot of work to configure it.

Great Company and BEAUTIFUL purse

I wrote the following review. I changed from 2 starts to five stars. The company reached out to me and offered to rectify the problem. I am very IMPRESSED!!! I will say that a stranger thought it was a Dooney and Bourke!!!
"I love this purse and have received many compliments on it. However, one of the pins holding the handles fell out somewhere. I tried to work with Amazon to get a new pin for it, but because I received it in March, they cannot do anything. I will use a paper clip to hold the handle, but obviously it will not look like a purse anyone would want to
purchase. I expected it to last at least through the summer."

Won't open wide enough.

The purse looks very good. However it only opens 4". It is very difficult to quickly find items when trying to make s purchase. Especially when there is a long line.
