Black Walnut Stratified Seed (Juglans nigra)

Sold in packs of 20 seeds in damp media. Our Black walnut seed is collected locally from mature parent trees that have stood the test of time. Seed is currently in storage and orders placed now will ship in late March/early April when it is fully stratified. Free shipping on stratified seeds!

Black walnut is a remarkable tree, with a host of uses. The most notable being it's timber and edible nuts. The wood is valued for its deep rich color and decent rot resistance. The edible nuts are packed with protein and nutrients and offer excellent flavor. The shells are typically very hard to crack, which makes accessing the kernels a little tedious, but with the right technique kernels can come out in quarters easily.

It’s worth noting that black walnuts produce a compound called juglone that appears to have a negative effect on some other plants. It may be best to locate them away from annual gardens in order to avoid any incompatibility.

We recommend growing your planting stratified seeds in air an prune bed or air pruning containers in order to improve transplant success. Without air pruning the taproots of black walnuts can become very long, which makes transplanting difficult. Direct sowing is obviously possible, but has a much lower success rate due to predation by rodents. Black walnut will grow well in a wide range of soils and sites. Generally hardy from zones 4-9.

Our dogs hurt their mouths chewing these bones
Color: Purple & Blue
I don't do a lot of reviews because I realize many are objective opinions. However, in this case I felt it was necessary to warn others. Our dogs are aggressive chewers. Their last rubber bones (not these) which we've purchased before, and recently purchased again, were destroyed quickly. Chunks of rubber came off the ends. Since those didn't hold up like they used to, I found these harder bones hoping they would last longer. They were able to gnaw into the hard plastic within a few minutes. This created sharp edges that cut their mouths. When I saw a bit of blood on the bones, I took them away from the dogs and threw them away. I wondered why they quit chewing on them after being so excited at first. Also, these are hard enough to damage a tooth.

Pups have shown zero interest in these toys….
Color: Purple & Blue
I would agree that these are indestructible being neither of my dogs have shown any interest in these at all. At this rate they should last forever…
