Archontophoenix purpurea - Purple King Palm

Archontophoenix purpurea, commonly known as the Purple Crownshaft Palm or Purple King Palm, is an elegant palm celebrated for its distinctive, purple-colored crownshaft and feathery, arching fronds. This unique palm has a smooth, grey trunk and vibrant green foliage, providing an eye-catching tropical look to gardens and landscapes. Growing to a height of 10-15 metres, the Purple Crownshaft Palm adds striking height and colour to tropical and subtropical gardens.

Position

Purple Crownshaft Palm thrives in full sun to partial shade, performing best in warm, humid conditions. It is well-suited for tropical and subtropical climates and should be planted in a sheltered area to protect its delicate fronds from strong winds. This palm can tolerate light frost but grows best in frost-free environments.

Growth

This moderately fast-growing palm reaches a mature height of 10-15 metres with a spread of about 2–3 meters. Its tall, slender trunk, vibrant green fronds, and signature purple crownshaft make it an ideal choice for feature planting in tropical landscapes or as a focal point in mixed plantings.

Planting Guide

Archontophoenix purpurea grows best in well-drained, fertile soil that retains moisture. Plant in spring or early summer, allowing space for the full spread of its fronds. For container planting, use a high-quality potting mix with good drainage and place in a bright spot with indirect light. Water thoroughly upon planting, and add a layer of mulch around the base to help retain moisture and control weeds.

Plant Care

Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.  Fertilise every 2–3 months during the growing season with a slow-release fertiliser specially formulated for palms to encourage vibrant growth. Trim any dead or damaged fronds to maintain a clean appearance and promote healthy new growth.

Not good for sun protection
Color: #2 ROSE
Product smells good and leaves skin glowing and soft however the sun protection isn’t great. I’m someone who reapplies every 90 minutes like clockwork, everywhere and not just where the sun shines, and I’ve used this three times now and burned each time.

Perfect After-Sun Lotion
This lotion feels amazing after being out in the sun all day. It keeps my skin soft and hydrated without feeling greasy, and the scent is light and tropical. I also love the subtle glow it gives my skin. Great size for keeping in a beach bag or taking on vacation. Definitely recommend if you want your tan to last longer and your skin to feel moisturized.

Smells Devine
I got this Hawaiian Tropic After Sun Lotion to use after long beach days this past summer, and it quickly became part of my routine. It feels soothing on the skin after sun exposure and absorbs nicely without leaving a greasy layer. What I noticed most is how well it helps maintain my tan. My color seemed to last longer and fade more evenly when I consistently used it. I even saw a difference when I was using tanning beds — my skin looked more hydrated, which made the tan appear richer and less patchy. The scent is another highlight. It has that classic tropical fragrance that instantly smells like summer vacation — warm, beachy, and nostalgic without being overpowering. I’ll definitely be repurchasing before my upcoming vacation because it makes such a noticeable difference in how my skin looks and feels after sun exposure.
