Lonicera ciliosa

Orange honeysuckle is one of the very few species of native northwest vines. It’s one of the most potent hummingbird attractants, with its lightly-fragrant, tangerine-toned, trumpet-shaped flowers. And, as the name suggests, it is also favored by children who have adored sucking the sweet nectar from the base of the flowers for longer than anyone could possibly know. Beyond hummingbirds, the flowers will entice a plethora of insect pollinators, the vines provide nesting and refuge opportunities in spring and summer, while the orange-red berries are an excellent source of food for birds and small mammals in fall.

  • Plant type/canopy layer: deciduous, perennial, vine
  • Size at maturity: vine can grow up to 30’ long
  • Light requirements: part sun/part shade, full shade
  • Moisture requirements: moist to dry soil
  • Bloom time: April to July (May - July in the Portland Metro area)
  • Growth rate/ease: fast growing, moderately easy to grow
  • Wildlife support: flowers attract and provide nectar to hummingbirds adult butterflies, bees and other insect pollinators; berries are eaten by a variety of birds including robins, juncos, flickers, and finches; overall plant attracts beneficial and pest eating insects and is a caterpillar host and larval food source for likely over a dozen species of native butterflies and moths including the Variable Checkerspot moth, the White-lined Sphinx moth and the Hitched Arches moth. In Snohomish lore, crows are said to swing on the vines and it is known as “Ghost’s Swing” or “Owl’s Swing” in Coast Salish languages.
  • Native habitat/range: relatively common growing in open woodlands, forest edges, north-facing slopes and streambanks, from sea level to 2000m, on both sides of the Cascade crest from western British Columbia, throughout western Washington and Oregon, into northern California - but also can be found in the Idaho panhandle and neighboring Montana; and isolated communities in Utah and Arizona. Portland Plant List - yes.
  • Special features & uses: hummingbird magnet; drought-tolerant; ethnobotanical uses include using vines/stems as building materials, fiber, twine and as a black dye; medicinally, an infusion of bark or chewed leaf juice has been taken as a cold remedy and to treat sore throats, in reproductive health to strengthen the uterus, stimulate lacteal flow, as contraceptive, as a tuberculosis remedy and a general strengthening tonic, an infusion of crushed leaves can also used externally as a strengthening tonic, especially for children with epilepsy, and as a hair wash to encourage growth, improve hair strength and sleekness, a poultice of chewed leaves can be applied to bruises, vine pieces have been placed under pillows to induce sleep; landscape uses include habitat hedgerows, pollinator gardens and woodland gardens.

Gardening with Orange Honeysuckle: Orange honeysuckle tolerates a range of light and moisture conditions; part sun to full shade and moist to dry soils. That said, as will many species that are so forgiving; the more sunlight it gets, the more moisture it will appreciate. So, plants located in most-to-full sun are more likely to require supplemental water to maintain their vigor in the hot, dry summer months. If it’s not in too much sun, and the soils are rich enough to retain a reasonable amount of moisture, it can be quite drought-tolerant, once established. Example companion plants include creeping vine maple (Acer circinatum), oceanspray (Holodiscus discolor), Oregon grape (Mahonia nervosa), Nootka rose (Rosa nutkana), western meadowrue (Thalictrum occidentale) and fringecup (Tellima grandiflora), and streambank violet (Viola glabella).

In the wild, orange honeysuckle is a sprawling vine. So, be prepared to give it structural support, such as a trellis or arbor, as well as some ongoing training to achieve your desired look. Best case scenario, young happy letting it ramble freely along a fenceline, habitat hedgerow, or through the edges or your woodland garden. Generally honeysuckles are adored by aphids. If this is an issue for you, check curled leaves and spray off with water to remove small infestations. Or just leave them as food for the ladybugs and birds.

So worth it - painless
I decided to get the extended warranty for my Black & Decker hand vac. When it stopped holding the charge, I reached out to Asurion. First of all, I love how I don’t have to search through papers and emails to try to find my warranty. It’s right in my Amazon purchases. They immediately started a conversation via text message with me. It was so straightforward to get the information to them. Then they sent me a return label, then Bada Bing, Bada Bang, I sent back my malfunctioning hand back, and they sent me an Amazon gift card. I use the gift card to purchase a New Hands back because I can’t live without it. Everything went so smoothly and it was so quick I highly recommend it for any electronics that you rely on and you would replace if it became inoperable.

Did the right thing to resolve my issue.
Covered my cost with little hassle. Started down the path of going back to manufacturing company but decided to just do a refund. The product was a floor vac that died.

Very Easy Warranty Claim Process!!
I have purchased a lot of Asurion warranties for products on Amazon over the past 5 years. This is the first time I've had to use the warranty. The Tineco vacuum mop that I purchased wasn't working well at all. I looked online to see how to file a warranty claim with Asurion. I had purchased the top line Tineco almost 3 years ago and my warranty was for 3 years. I was concerned that there might be an issue due to the amount and/or because the warranty was getting close to the end of the warranty period (3 years). Filing the claim was all online and walked you through all of the steps - very easy to follow and understand. They emailed a shipping label to me (they paid for shipping) and sent the Tineco to them. I figured it would be a lengthy and difficult process. After they received everything, they promptly denied the claim and closed the it. They said my personal information didn't match. I called them and discovered that since I was using a different email address, they couldn't match it up. The customer service agent changed the information and refiled the claim for me. I received another shipping label and used it to ship the Tineco back to them. They notified me when they received the Tineco and told me they would let me know after the repair department had looked at it. I received notification within a few hours that they could not fix it and would issue an Amazon Gift Card for the price that I paid for the Tineco (no tax included, of course). The Gift Card was in my account within a few hours! That had to be the easiest warranty claim I've ever made! I highly recommend Asurion for their warranties. The only thing I would suggest is that they change the warranty documentation to make it clear that they need the email address you filed the claim under and give you a place to put your new email address, if it has changed. I will not hesitate to continue to purchase Asurion warranties for products on Amazon! I like the idea of the monthly claim amount that is available for $16.99 per month, but you would have to buy a lot of products and warranty them for that to be equitable. I did the math and realized that I would have to purchase warranties for products that total $2,039 - $4,078 per year, every year (based on the charge of 10%-15% per warranty) to equal what I would pay for the individual warranties. I don't buy that many products that need warranties though, so it's not a value for me at all. IF I purchased the monthly warranty ($16.99 per month) and later decided that I didn't want to continue to pay that amount, none of my products would be warrantied! So, I had to really think about it first. I couldn't justify the monthly charge forever for the amount of products I purchase that can be warrantied. } Asurion - please consider offering the same warranty at a lower price per month - maybe you could put a cap on the dollar amount allowed to make it feasible for everyone. I would be very interested if the price wasn't so much.
