Description

philodendron polly Alocasia 'Polly' Variegata Aurea – Yellow Variegation FormAlocasia 'Polly' Variegata Aurea Alocasia 'Polly' Variegata Aurea brings the compact 'Polly' shape together with yellow to cream variegation across dark, shield shaped leaves. The blades are sharply marked: pale main veins cut through the surface, the margins are neatly scalloped, and each new leaf can show a different balance of green and aurea patterning. This plant grows from a short rhizomatous base and builds a tight upright clump of petioles.

Alocasia 'Polly' Variegata Aurea

Alocasia 'Polly' Variegata Aurea brings the compact 'Polly' shape together with yellow to cream variegation across dark, shield-shaped leaves. The blades are sharply marked: pale main veins cut through the surface, the margins are neatly scalloped, and each new leaf can show a different balance of green and aurea patterning.

This plant grows from a short rhizomatous base and builds a tight upright clump of petioles. The pale leaf sections can brown faster under direct sun, dry air or irregular watering. Bright filtered light, warmth and an airy root zone reduce scorch risk and protect the compact rhizome from wet-root stress.

Pattern and compact growth

  • Leaf shape: Compact arrowhead-to-shield-like leaves with firm texture and scalloped margins.
  • Colour: Dark green leaf tissue with yellow, cream or yellow-green variegated sectors.
  • Veins: Pale primary veins create a clear graphic pattern across each blade.
  • Growth habit: Upright clumping Alocasia from a rhizomatous base.
  • Pot behaviour: Compact petioles rise close together from the base, keeping the plant tight in the pot.
  • Pattern variation: New leaves may differ in marbling, sectoring and the amount of yellow tissue.

Inside the variegated Polly habit

Alocasia 'Polly' belongs to the cultivated Alocasia 'Amazonica' hybrid line, and this aurea form adds variable yellow patterning to that familiar compact leaf shape. Leaf pattern comes from the growth point. Bright filtered placement protects pale tissue from scorch and gives the plant enough light for short, tidy growth.

As with other rhizomatous Alocasia, the base should stay firm and the roots need oxygen around them. A potting mix that remains wet and dense for too long can damage the rhizome before the leaves show clear stress.

Keeping Alocasia 'Polly' Variegata Aurea steady

  • Light: Give bright indirect light. Direct afternoon sun can burn pale variegated sections and mark the leaf surface.
  • Water: Water when the top 2–3 cm of substrate feel dry, then let excess water drain fully.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, perlite, pumice or coco chips so the rhizome has moisture and air around the roots.
  • Temperature: Aim for 20–28°C and avoid cold windowsills. Chilled, wet substrate can trigger yellowing and root stress.
  • Humidity: Around 60–70% humidity reduces the risk of new leaves sticking or tearing while they unfurl.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. A diluted complete fertiliser every few waterings is enough for a compact variegated Alocasia.
  • Potting: Move up only one pot size when the roots have filled the current pot. A much larger pot can hold too much wet mix around the rhizome.

Problems to watch on Alocasia 'Polly' Variegata Aurea

  • Browning pale areas: Yellow and cream sectors can crisp from direct sun, dry air or inconsistent moisture.
  • Yellow lower leaves: Check for cold temperatures, old wet substrate or a pot that stays damp for too long.
  • Soft base: A soft rhizome or sour-smelling substrate points to root or rhizome rot and needs fast action.
  • All-green offsets: Remove a separate all-green offset during repotting if repeated green growth takes over one growth point.
  • Pests: Spider mites and thrips can mark the leaf surface, especially around veins and new growth.

Toxicity note for Alocasia 'Polly' Variegata Aurea

Alocasia contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and small children, and avoid contact with the mouth or eyes after handling cut or damaged tissue.

Polly background and genus name

Alocasia 'Polly' is part of the cultivated Alocasia 'Amazonica' hybrid line, with parentage linked to Alocasia sanderiana × Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana'. The compact 'Polly' form became known from tissue-culture material in the early 2000s. The genus name Alocasia was published by G. Don in 1839 and is formed in relation to Colocasia, a closely related aroid genus.

Comfy and Cute (but run small)
Size: 3 Big Kid, Color: Black, Size: 3 Big Kid, Color: Black
I wanted black shoes for my kids’ Halloween costumes, but specifically ones they liked and would wear again. I let my three daughters (9, 10 and 11 y/o) scroll Amazon and they chose these, saying their friends had similar ones. These were only $20 a pair, which is a steal for kids tennis shoes so I didn’t expect much. They seem pretty solid. Two of my kids have worn them for a couple weeks and they’re holding up well and seem comfortable-no kid complaints. However, they do run about one size too small. All 3 girls had to size up one size. One of them has a taller and slightly wider foot and she struggles a bit to put them on, but they are comfortable one she does. You can loosen and tighten the elastic laces, but the shoe itself is one piece and doesn’t really stretch so if you have a fat footed kid I’d suggest another shoe, otherwise these are great.

Good enough
Size: 13.5 Little Kid, Color: Gradient Pink
These are comfy and my daughter loves wearing them. The plastic piece that moves on the laces has ripped up the laces after about a month making it tricky to move. These are a good fill in shoe, but won't last a whole school year.

Good shoes for growing rough boys
Size: 4.5 Big Kid, Color: All Black/Without Strap
Bought these for my son and he loves them. He so rough on shoes I refuse to pay over $30 on him a pair. I still wanted him to have comfort and stability to support his growing body. These seemed perfect. He can put them on by himself and the fit is true to size. I appreciate when I can find half sizes.

My daughter loves these shoes. Very well made and stylish! I don’t want to spend a lot of money on shoes the last few weeks of school and these were perfect.
