Calathea 'Ornata' – The Striking Pink Pinstripe Plant

If you love plants that make a statement, Calathea 'Ornata' is the one to bring home. Known for its deep green leaves elegantly streaked with fine pink lines, this beauty looks like it was hand-painted. Flip a leaf over, and you'll find a rich purple underside—a little hidden drama just for you.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Striking Foliage: The soft pink pinstripes against the deep green backdrop create a sophisticated, artistic touch in any space.
  • Low Light Friendly: Perfect for brightening up lower-light areas where other plants might struggle.
  • Air-Purifying: Like other Calatheas, it helps refresh the air, making your home feel a little more serene.
  • Pet-Friendly: Safe for curious cats and dogs!

Calatheas are sometimes called "prayer plants" because their leaves move with the light, gently rising and falling throughout the day. Watching this subtle motion adds an almost meditative element to your home.

Plant Details:

  • Mature Height: 2 feet
  • Mature Width: 1-2 feet
  • Sun Exposure: Bright, indirect light (no direct sun)
  • Botanical Name: Calathea ornata
  • Common Names: Pinstripe Plant, Peacock Plant, Zebra Plant

Fascinating Facts About Calathea 'Ornata'

Nature’s Living Art: The pink pinstripes on its leaves aren’t just beautiful—they actually become more vibrant as the plant matures, making each leaf a unique masterpiece.

A Plant That Moves: Calathea 'Ornata' belongs to the Marantaceae family, meaning its leaves fold upward at night and lower again in the morning—a fascinating daily dance known as nyctinasty.

Thirsty but Picky: It loves humidity but prefers filtered water—tap water with chemicals like chlorine can cause its leaves to brown. Distilled or rainwater will keep it happiest.

Rainforest Origins: Native to South American tropical forests, this plant thrives in warm, humid environments, making it a perfect fit for bathrooms or kitchens where humidity is naturally higher.

Symbol of New Beginnings: In some cultures, Calatheas represent new growth and fresh starts, making them a thoughtful gift for someone entering a new chapter in life.

With its bold colors, elegant leaf movements, and air-purifying benefits, the Calathea 'Ornata' is more than just a houseplant—it's a dynamic, living piece of art!

This is the perfect plant for plant lovers who appreciate unique foliage and a little daily movement in their greenery. Place it in a decorative pot, mist it occasionally, and enjoy its ever-changing beauty.

returned- for now

I was using the lotion version of this for about a year, then went to the balm for more hydration. However, it seems to be breaking me out. I think because it's spring, im not needing as much occlusion as i did during winter. I'm gonna go back to the lotion formula, then pick this up again next winter. It is a little hard to spread, but I spray the avene mineral water on, let it dry slightly, and press the balm into my skin when its still wet. That helps thin the balm just enough to rub in. Otherwise, it can actually feel kind of rough!

Impressive

Nice thick cream! I even saw results (skin improvement) within days. I like this way better than their Cicalfate+, as it’s easier to rub in, less greasy, and doesn’t have the water vs cream separation issue. I’m not a huge fan of the pump top for this one, but at least it’s a tube instead of a solid canister (where you can’t see how much is left or get to the last bit).
