Introducing the stunning Tradescantia Pallida 'Purpurea' – a dramatic trailing houseplant with deep purple foliage that adds instant colour and contrast to any room. Sometimes called the Purple Heart Plant, it's a bold choice for shelves, hanging baskets, or trailing over containers.

Native to northeastern Mexico, this low-maintenance plant is a favourite for beginners and seasoned collectors alike. Its vibrant foliage and fast-growing habit make it a brilliant addition to modern and maximalist interiors alike.

This variety features slender, pointed leaves in a rich purple hue, with new leaves emerging an even deeper shade. The undersides of the leaves glow with a metallic sheen, and the stems can cascade elegantly over time, giving it fantastic movement and texture.

Your plant arrives in a plastic nursery pot approx. W12cm and is ready to thrive in your home or make a thoughtful, long-lasting gift. If you’re gifting, we can include a free handwritten card — just leave your message at checkout, and we’ll handle the rest, discreetly and beautifully packaged.

Native habitat and growth pattern
In the wild, Tradescantia Pallida grows in warm, dry subtropical regions, often as ground cover or in rocky outcrops. Indoors, it enjoys similar conditions — bright light, warmth, and well-draining soil. It can be easily propagated from cuttings, and with the right care, it quickly forms a trailing mat of vibrant foliage.

Styling tips

  • Perfect for hanging baskets, macramé holders or high shelves

  • Adds contrast to neutral interiors or green plant collections

  • Works well in minimalist rooms needing a pop of colour

  • Ideal as a trailing feature in a sunny windowsill

Tradescantia Pallida 'Purpurea' care guide

Light requirements:
Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate a few hours of direct sun. The more light it gets, the more vivid the purple foliage becomes.

Watering:
Water when the top few inches of soil feel dry. Soak through, then let it drain completely — never leave it sitting in water.

Feeding:
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser. We recommend our Original Vegan Plant Food, formulated from seaweed and natural nutrients.

Humidity:
Tolerates average indoor humidity well, though appreciates occasional misting in dry homes.

Pet safety:
Tradescantia is considered mildly toxic to pets if ingested. It’s best kept out of reach of curious cats and dogs.

Propagation:
Simple to propagate via stem cuttings — root them in water or straight into soil. A great choice for sharing with friends or growing a fuller pot.

Why choose this plant?

  • Stunning purple foliage and trailing habit

  • Very easy to grow and propagate

  • A bold alternative to green houseplants

  • Perfect for gifting or adding texture to your indoor garden

  • Fast-growing and ideal for styling

FAQs

Will the purple colour fade indoors?
Only if it's in low light. Place it somewhere bright and the colour will stay vibrant.

Can I prune it?
Yes — snip leggy stems to encourage bushier growth. You can replant the cuttings!

How fast does it grow?
Very fast in the right conditions. Expect lots of new growth in spring and summer.

Supports DP Alt + Power Delivery from one source
This is one of the very, very few USB-C hubs out there that successfully pushes DisplayPort Alt and 100w PD functionality from one source cable to one device. My monitor has a USB-C DP alt port that also pushes 95w PD and this hub successfully pushes both of those to my laptop, phone, and android handheld console. The marketing material says something about USB PD cannot work with DP alt, but it seems to be working fine for me so who knows. With this little hub in-between the link from the monitor to the device, I can now add a USB ethernet adapter and game controller, and I only ever have to plug one USB-C cable into my device (and I am using a USB4 extension cable with no issues as well) and it all works perfectly!

Supports Reverse Charging a Laptop on Monitors with USB-C PD!
This adapter is unique in that it supports reverse charging + video on the same port. I use this with an LG monitor (60W PD) and an M1 Pro Mac. At first, I had connectivity issues: hub was disconnecting and reconnecting every few seconds. I followed advice to update the firmware on the hub, but that didn't solve the issue. Turns out, my monitor also needed a firmware update. Once I updated the monitor firmware, it stabilized and has been working great ever since.

Works perfectly with Macbook Air M2 - power, audio, video, sleep/wake, in clamshell mode!
My monitor has a USB-C video input that supports power delivery - so I was supposed to be able to charge my laptop with the same connection that goes to the monitor. Have had trouble finding an unpowered hub that actually supports all this without any hiccups, but according to all the specs I knew this was supposed to be possible. But this one does! Now I can connect my apple laptop to my monitor, keyboard and mouse, and run in clamshell mode or with the laptop open, and it charges, wakes from sleep, does all the things I want. It also sends audio to the monitor (as it should). And I only need one USB-C connection to my laptop to do all this. Note: I just got this hub so I don't know about longevity, and I haven't tested transfer speeds from all the ports on the hub, because that's not a big concern for me.

So far, so good. It's a USB-C hub, Anker has been doing USB hubs and power supplies for many years
I've always been impressed with Anker products, and great customer service! I do feel like they are starting to abandon the Android side of things recently, and the selection of cables has declined. USB-A cables seem to be discontinued, as well as USB-B. I did have a really great CSR experience a while back. I had bought a Lithium Ion car battery jumpstarters, and had not used it for several years. I needed it one night, and the cables to connect to the battery had failed. Couldn't start my car. Even though the warranty was expired, and the product was even discontinued, they shipped me (at their cost) a replacement set of cables. Now a loyal customer.
