Aloe cv. 'Black Gem' is a very popular ornamental succulent, prized for its dark, glossy foliage that takes on an almost black sheen in strong light. Compact, striking, and robust, it brings an elegant and contemporary touch to succulent collections.
Origin: Horticultural hybrid resulting from the cross between Aloe and Haworthia (often classified among the Gasteraloe ). Selected for its dense growth habit and exceptional dark color.
Growth: Slow to moderate growth. It forms a compact rosette 10 to 15 cm in diameter, composed of thick, rigid, triangular leaves that are very dark green, turning purplish-brown or black under strong sunlight. Over time, it may produce a few offsets at the base.
Flowers: Occasional flowering in spring or summer. The upright flower stalks bear small tubular orange to red flowers, typical of hybrid Aloe .
Light: Prefers soft, direct sunlight or bright light. Strong light accentuates the darker hues of the foliage. In insufficient light, the plant becomes greener and less compact.
Watering: Water only when the substrate is completely dry. While very drought-tolerant, it is susceptible to overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Reduce watering frequency when the plant enters dormancy.
Substrate: Use a perfectly draining succulent potting mix, enriched with pumice stone, perlite or coarse sand to prevent water stagnation and ensure good root aeration.
Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and animals.
