This white-seeded sesame variety was no doubt introduced to Thomas Jefferson by one of the African or African-descended people whom he enslaved and forced to work the farm at his hilltop estate at Monticello, outside Charlottesville, Virginia. The seeds have long been maintained by the private foundation that continues to run Monticello, and this variety has been popularized by our friends at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange (who provided stock seed to our source, Chris Smith of The Utopian Seed Project).

Sesame is often considered the world's oldest oilseed crop. The seeds are roughly 50% fat. While most Americans typically associate sesame with Asian cuisine — indeed, toasted sesame oil and sesame seeds are crucial flavors in much Korean, Chinese, and Japanese cooking — the main sesame species (Sesamum indicum) is believed to originate in India, and most other wild species come from Africa. It has been a major crop in Africa since at least the time of the Pharaohs. Even today, an African country — Sudan — produces the largest crop of sesame seeds (nearly a million tons annually).

Old sesame varieties like this one were generally referred to as "benne," which is a word from the Gullah-Geechee people (descendants of formerly enslaved people who developed a unique culture living in relative isolation on the Sea Islands of Georgia and South Carolina). Indicative of the deep connections of Gullah-Geechee culture to the African continent (Gullah-Geechee culture is generally considered the "closest" African-American culture to Africa), the word "benne" comes directly from the word bĕne, from the Maninka language, spoken by the Malinke people of Guinea in West Africa.

Plants of 'Monticello White' (a name we would change if it wasn't already available from other sources with this name) are productive, vigorous and heat-loving.

Fun fact: The McDonald's corporation purchases 75% of Mexico's entire sesame seed crop for use on its hamburger buns.

GROWING TIPS: Start indoors a week or two before last frost. Plant out once ground has warmed (around the time you might start green beans). They grow to roughly 6-ft. tall and may benefit from staking. Harvest by cutting stalks when there are more brown pods than green. Stand upright to dry, or allow to fully dry and cut dry stalks with open pods. Turn dry stalks upside down over a tarp or cloth, shake seeds out, and winnow.

Fabulously bizarre and effective
These silicone socks have to be the strangest item I have ever ordered from Amazon. However strange they are, I was pleasantly surprised with them. My order came with two pairs, and I took one pair out to wash before use. I laughed at handling them then because they were a cross between hospital socks and leftover mannequin skin…trippy. The socks dried fast, so I put on foot lotion and put the socks on. The socks are beige skin tones that cover the entire foot up to the ankle, basically booties. The silicone is very soft and makes putting on and taking off the socks easy. They are also surprisingly easy to walk around in because the bottoms have grips, again, like hospital socks. I walked on tile, hardwood, and carpet with no slipping. The booties also stayed in place with no issues. I was concerned my feet would sweat, but that didn't happen. I was able to wear them for 3 hours without sweaty feet. When I took them off, my feet were a lot more soft than before or if I had used regular socks. For reference, my feet are not terrible, but the skin around my toes is dry and peeling from my picking(gross, I know). The socks I got are a size large, which worried me because they are big, but the site said for my shoe size (9) that's what I should order, and they were right. They are the perfect size and stretchy for room. I can't believe how cool and well-thought-out these socks are, on top of working. Honestly, these are among the top 20 favorite items I've ordered from Amazon. They may look incredibly strange, and they are, but they work wonders.

Absolute game changer for chronically dry feet/cracked heels
Size: S (up to size 7)-Beige
I had recently bought a pair of silicone heel/ankle wraps to fill out my boot a little since I noticed my heels were lifting when I was skating. I tested them out around the house and noticed they left my heels softer while the rest of my sockless feet got quite dry. So I got these full foot silicone socks to see the effect of having my whole foot covered. I slather the entirety of my feet with Dr. Scholl's Severe Cracked Heel Restoring Balm (love how convenient it is to apply it to my feet with the solid stick form) and then slip them into these silicone socks. After just a couple hours, when I pull out my feet they're (a teeny bit sweaty at first), but then overall soft and smooth and have absorbed the balm fully leaving barely any residue in the silicone sock. I find these silicone socks generally comfortable; I wear them in the evenings while relaxing on the couch, take them off after a couple hours and let my feet breathe a bit, and then reapply my balm and socks and wear them to bed. If I wake up in the middle of the night, which I almost always do (not because of the socks), I'll take the socks off and allow my feet to breathe again. I wear a woman's size 6 shoe and the small size is pretty comfortable. However, I made the mistake of wearing them while being on my feet for a couple hours straight during household chores -- they must've somehow cut off my circulation a bit with the standing, so I wouldn't recommend wearing these silicone socks while being active. And since they're not exactly my foot size, they slide around sometimes and will start to feel tight at my big toe. But if that happens, I just tug on the toe area of the sock to give my big toe more wiggle room and problem solved. Prior to wearing these socks, I was soaking and doing heavy duty exfoliation of my feet every week. These socks seem like they'll work to help me extend the time between soakings and exfoliations. The 5 pack is a great value. So far none have torn, so they seem rather durable. Not sure what I could even do to tear a hole in these.

EXCELLENT FEET MOISTURE PROTECTION
Size: S (up to size 7)-Beige, Size: S (up to size 7)-Beige
Why did you pick this product vs others?: I have burns on my feet and needed something that I could put burn creme on and still walk around in with. I tried other silicone footsie but they would teae really easily. So far these are doing really well for this purpose. They are holding their shape too. The only caution I have is the same with all silicone footsies: They can be slippery on wet floors, so also wear with socks over them. The biggest issues is when they say a size they mean it. The silicone used in these have little give in them, so they won't stretch out and loose their shape. That can be a good thing, or not so good, depending on how well they fit your feet and what your intent is with wearing these. The other issue is if they fit snug around those toes, that tends to be where the first tear in the material will happen. Because of how these are made, the tear is actually more like cracking in the material and once it occurs you won't be able to get much use out of the sock after that. If you are planning to wear them around the house or for long term use, I suggest going up a size or look for the toeless options.
