Heliconia 'Hot Rio Nights'

Heliconia 'Hot Rio Nights' is a bold and striking tropical perennial known for its tall, upright growth and vivid red bracts that appear from mid-spring to autumn. These stunning, bird-like bracts, combined with its large, banana-like green leaves, bring a dramatic and exotic look to landscapes. Growing to a height of 3.5–4.5 meters, 'Hot Rio Nights' is perfect as a backdrop plant in tropical gardens or as a captivating focal point in large beds and borders.

Position

'Hot Rio Nights' thrives in full sun to partial shade, with its brightest colours developing in strong light. It prefers rich, well-drained soil with high organic content and performs best in warm, humid environments. Sensitive to frost, this Heliconia is ideal for tropical and subtropical gardens or protected areas in mild climates.

Growth

This fast-growing, clumping perennial reaches a mature height of 3.5–4.5 meters with a spread of about 1.5 meters, forming a dense stand of upright bracts and lush foliage. Its tall structure and vibrant bracts make it an excellent choice for adding height, structure, and tropical flair to garden beds and mixed borders.

Planting Guide

Heliconia 'Hot Rio Nights' grows best in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil with added organic matter. Plant year round, spacing plants about 1.5 meters apart to allow for natural spreading. For large container planting, use a high-quality potting mix that retains moisture but drains well, and place the container in a sunny or semi-shaded area. Water thoroughly after planting, and apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Plant Care

Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during warm or dry spells, as Heliconia prefers a humid environment. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser during the growing season to encourage lush growth and prolific bract production. In cooler climates, bring container-grown plants indoors or to a sheltered area during winter. Prune faded bracts and any damaged leaves to maintain a fresh appearance.

It doesn’t stay in
The pipe keeps coming out. Not worth the money. Not sturdy to hold a top table.

Good finish, poor hardware.
Set screws are poor quality and are sometimes powdercoated on the exposed threads. Leads to striped hex sockets and inability to tighten properly. Durable finish as evidenced by no visible damage after throwing parts across the shop in frustration. Ended up running self tapping screws thru parts to complete assembly.

Kinda flimsy…
Thought the assembly was metal, it’s some kind of PVC.

nice sturdy frame
We had a piece of actual wood lane from a bowling alley that i wanted a table made out of. Which made it weigh about 400 pounds, guessing. Our biggest worry about this is the frame holding it up with grandkids around!!! And being able to move it to sit behind it or clean around it when needed. This was what we decided on. Tim said it was super easy to put it together. The height was just a tad taller than our chairs, but there are pieces that can be taken out to accommodate this. When i told my husband it had wheels on it and definitely would aid moving it around. He said oh yeah, that's going to work real well with the weight of this table. And trust me it was said very sarcastically. So, that these worked as well as they have, really impressed him. We have friends that we gave a piece of lane to so they could make a bar in their kitchen out of it. He bought some pipe in town and he paid a heck of a lot more money out than we wanted to put out. So, we were extremely happy to find this. It is sturdy, great value and we are all very happy with it and it looks great! I highly recommend it. I think no matter what you are going to use it for, it is going to fit into any decor.

Quite good!
Quite a solid set of legs. It little flimsier than I had hoped for but we are not moving the table we built around much. The wheels are also quite small. I would purchase again though!
