Anthurium balaoanum

With slender stems, long petioles and green, arrow-shaped leaves, Anthurium balaoanum grows as a climbing Anthurium. As the stems lengthen, they are easier to manage when they can grow upward on a pole, plank or textured support.

On mature plants, the leaves can reach around 35 cm, while indoor size depends on support, light, warmth and root development. Established plants may flower, producing typical Anthurium spathes and spadices. Indoors, the climbing stems and arrow-shaped leaves are usually more noticeable than the flowers.

In Ecuador, Anthurium balaoanum grows in wet tropical habitats as a subshrub or epiphyte, often on trees. In a pot, it does best with an airy root zone, steady warmth and a structure it can climb.

Climbing growth and leaf shape

  • Growth habit: Slender climbing Anthurium with elongated internodes.
  • Leaves: Green sagittate blades with a pointed front lobe and broad rear lobes.
  • Mature size: Mature leaves can reach around 35 cm.
  • Petioles: Long petioles hold the leaves away from the stem.
  • Support: A pole, plank or textured support gives the stem something to climb.

Anthurium balaoanum care and support

  • Light: Bright, filtered light helps the stems and leaves develop well.
  • Watering: Water once the top part of the mix has dried, keeping the root zone lightly moist in a free-draining mix.
  • Substrate: Use a coarse, well-aerated Anthurium mix with bark and pumice or perlite.
  • Temperature: Keep temperatures warm, ideally around 18–28 °C.
  • Root zone: A free-draining pot helps protect the stem base and roots.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps new leaves expand and aerial roots attach to support.
  • Support: Add support early, while the stem is still easy to guide upward.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth.
  • Repotting: Repot before the plant becomes top-heavy or unstable.

Common growth issues

  • Loose, stretched growth: Can follow low light, watering that swings too dry or too wet, or no climbing support.
  • Yellowing lower leaves: Often comes from wet or compacted substrate.
  • Brown tips or edges: Dry air, irregular watering or fertiliser buildup can cause this.
  • Soft stem base: Check drainage and root health.
  • Distorted new growth: Inspect young leaves for thrips or mites.

Handling and placement

Keep Anthurium balaoanum away from pets and children. Its calcium oxalate crystals can irritate the mouth and throat if plant material is ingested, and sap may irritate skin or eyes.

What the name means

The genus Anthurium refers to the flower and its tail-like spadix. The species name balaoanum refers to Balao in Ecuador.

6 magical stars -- another favorite from Mia!
Format: Kindle
Clara Campbell is drawn to New Orleans by more than just her new appointment to the New Orleans Ballet Company. But though she is living her dreams, she feels alone and disconnected from everyone around her. In interest in a local legend finds her approaching the Weeping Wall at Windisle Plantation, an abandoned property with a ghost story attached. But as she places her wish in the wall, it is not a ghost that she hears beyond the walls. Jonah Chamberlain hasn’t left the walls of Windisle in 8 years, long enough that the locals all believe the property abandoned. The walls are all he needs to keep himself apart from the judgement of the public, who watched his decisions lead to a tragedy for which he paid dearly. Their interactions are separated by a wall, but connected by the story of the lost lovers from so long ago. The ghost story is a safe topic for Jonah, and though he isn’t sure why he is suddenly talking to one of the many visitors to the wall, he finds it impossible to ignore the woman who won’t let him hide any longer. These two are both so lonely that it doesn’t take much of a connection for them to find further intrigue. But what they find as Clara digs deeper into the plantation’s past keeps her coming back for more, as Jonah debates the merits of letting someone in to his safe-place. Both Clara and Jonah have personal character journeys to face over the course of the book, and for as much as the plot is tied to the past, it is also directly tied to these two characters growing and learning. The Wish Collector combines contemporary with magic and the past. The historical thread isn’t enough to fully call this a split timeline, but the glimpses of the past are the perfect tie between the history and the present of Windisle Plantation. The legend of ghosts in the assumed abandoned building is intriguing as Clara does what she can to solve the century old mystery. There were so many pieces to this story that I was still thinking of the connections and bits of magic days after finishing. Part Beauty & the Beast, part Phantom of the Opera, part New Orleans magic, this book is a fantastic mix of elements that inspires and enchants. Once again, Mia Sheridan has crafted a tale that takes my expectations and soars far beyond what I could have imagined.

A Smooth Move for Your Beard Game
Size: 1 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This beard oil is a solid little bottle of magic for anyone looking to keep their beard soft and manageable. The blend of argan oil and lavender smells great without being overpowering and really helps hydrate without feeling greasy. I’ve noticed my facial hair feels less scratchy and looks healthier after using it a few times. It’s easy to apply, and a little goes a long way, so this one definitely earns its spot in the daily routine. If you want your beard to feel smooth and look sharp, this oil is an easy no-fuss option.

Only had this a week so review based solely on scent. Like old school medicinal or V05 or something. I don’t love it.
