Philodendron tenue aff. – Rare Climbing Aroid with Glossy Rippled Ovate Leaves

Philodendron tenue aff. is an extraordinary aroid closely allied to Philodendron tenue K.Koch and P. augusti. This form is highly ornamental, producing large, ovate blades that are glossy and textured with elegant rippling. Its bold leaf structure and sheen make it one of the most striking Philodendrons for collectors seeking unusual foliage plants. As a hemiepiphytic climber, it develops its most impressive foliage when allowed to ascend a support.

Why Philodendron tenue aff. is Special

  • Leaf form: Large, ovate blades with a glossy, rippled surface
  • Texture: Subtle corrugation adds depth and light play
  • Growth habit: Climbing aroid that thrives with vertical support
  • Collector value: Rarely available, admired for its dramatic foliage

Natural Background

Philodendron tenue and its close relatives are native to tropical South America, where they grow as climbing hemiepiphytes in humid rainforest understories. They begin life on the forest floor and ascend tree trunks in search of more light. In cultivation, this natural habit can be mimicked with moss poles, totems, or bark slabs, encouraging larger and more dramatic leaves.

Care Tips for Philodendron tenue aff.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light supports glossy leaf development; avoid harsh direct sun
  • Watering: Keep substrate evenly moist, but let the top layer dry slightly before watering again
  • Humidity: Prefers 60 – 80% for optimal foliage texture and size
  • Temperature: Thrives between 20 – 28 °C; protect from cold drafts
  • Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix with organic matter
  • Fertilisation: Apply diluted balanced feed every 4 – 6 weeks during growth

Growth and Display

This species performs best when grown vertically, producing progressively larger leaves as it climbs. Its glossy, rippled foliage makes it a statement piece for interiors, greenhouses, or conservatories. With patience and the right support, it can grow into an impressive specimen.

Common Issues and Fixes

  • Yellow leaves: Typically from overwatering; improve drainage
  • Small leaves: Lack of support; climbing encourages mature foliage
  • Browning edges: Often due to low humidity; increase ambient moisture

Etymology of Philodendron

The genus Philodendron (Schott, 1830) comes from the Greek philo- (“loving”) and dendron (“tree”), meaning “tree-lover,” referring to its natural climbing habit.

Pretty Good
Color: Red Nylon Yellow Hotdog
The toy is good for a heavy chewer, but is very slippery. You may want to rough it up a bit before giving it to your dog so they can hold onto it.

WARNING - EXTREMELY SHARP AREAS
Color: Yellow Nylon Corn on the Cob, Color: Yellow Nylon Corn on the Cob
UPDATE: The 2nd one I ordered was exactly the same with the sharp parts in the same areas as the first one. I cannot stress enough that a few points are sharp enough to cut or badly scratch. So if you’re planning on putting some food on it so your pup can lick, this is not the product you want! This could still scratch or cut the gums if used as a chew toy too though. I was thinking about sanding the sharp points but then I have no idea if that exposes any chemicals somehow? Really wanted this to work out! I took this corn on the cob toy out of the plastic to wash it and before I even got to the sink I realized there were several areas that are super sharp. A few sharp enough that could cut or badly scratch! It was sealed in a plastic bag and shows no signs of being used so this defect must happen at the manufactures level. I added a video showing how easily it snags a cotton ball, cotton pad and even a beanie. Please thoroughly check your item before giving it to your pup! I was so excited to put some smashed banana on this thing and give it to my guy and thank god I checked it first! I’m going to return it and see if a 2nd one is any better and I’ll update if it is or isn’t. Also, the super sharp spots were very hard to photograph which is why I added the video.
