It's a strange thing sometimes. Maybe it's just me, but there are times in life that things sit uncomfortably and you just let it be, easier not to seek out alternatives. So it was with plant hangers.

Every year a good chunk of the local population dutifully go to the garden centres, buy their annual hanging plants and hang them around the place. It truly is gorgeous. A mass splash of colour all over the place as we shake off the winter and welcome in a few brief months of summer. 

It is of course a perennial thing that annuals die off. With plastic hangers being so plentiful and cheap the whole lot gets tossed out, dying plants, dirt, pot and all. That doesn't sit right with most of us I am sure, and yet every year there they all are sadly consigned to the sides of our streets, ready to be dumped in landfill.

For me then, as my environmental consciousness is slowly but surely being roused (apologies to those warriors who have been screaming about this for decades) these Coconut Plant Hangers were a bit of a light bulb moment.

Whether the whole shebang is tossed out at the end of the season or the dead plants simply put into the compost bin, the harm to the environment is non-existent. The latter is recommended. Why buy new hangers next year when you can store and re-use the ones you already have?

The coconut shells would have been discarded as waste if they had not been turned into something useful. They are of course fully compostable. On the other hand they will also last for years if treated well. 

Natural materials are put to excellent and effective use to make this stylish plant hanger formed of a polished coconut shell suspended with sturdy twine. Naturally, every one is different and unique. And naturally they are made by fairly paid artisans.

For me though it goes beyond the obvious. Here is an alternative to plastic that is just as convenient without all the negatives. Not only that but they are much prettier and enhance any setting you care to place them- indoors or out.

Story

Siesta Crafts was started in 1983 by Chris and Les Harper with a market stall selling handicrafts that were brought back from their travels from Mexico and Guatemala (hence the name!).

They now import directly from suppliers in countries all over the world on a Fair Trade basis and they are proud to be a member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers.

They specialise in unusual and interesting gifts. In this day and age of anodyne, cloned town high streets, it is good to see they have a vibrant, colourful presence with a wide range of unique and colourful handcrafted and fair trade items.

Their intention is that by trading with their producers they are helping them to achieve economic self-sufficiency, whilst simultaneously bringing to their customers the skills and crafts of other cultures.
