Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’, commonly known as the Rubber Plant ‘Robusta’, is a timeless indoor classic celebrated for its broad, glossy foliage and effortless sophistication. A member of the Moraceae family, this cultivar is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and India, where it grows as a canopy tree reaching impressive heights.

The leaves are large, oval, and luxuriously thick with a deep emerald-green gloss and a prominent central vein. New leaves emerge encased in a striking bronze sheath before unfurling to reveal a smooth, vibrant surface. Compared to other Ficus varieties, ‘Robusta’ is notably hardy and upright, making it perfect for modern interiors where bold greenery meets minimal maintenance.

Architectural, air-purifying, and effortlessly elegant, Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ is a living design statement — equally at home in a minimalist loft or lush tropical interior.

Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light, though it will tolerate moderate light levels. For the richest colour and fastest growth, position near a bright window with filtered sunlight. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, and low-light corners, which may slow growth and cause leaf drop.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Overwatering can cause yellowing leaves and root rot, while underwatering may lead to drooping or curling leaves. During winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant’s growth slows.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C; avoid temperatures below 15 °C.

  • Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity (40–60%) but thrives with slightly higher levels. Occasional misting or a humidifier will maintain leaf vitality, especially in heated rooms.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix, ideally a combination of compost, perlite, and pine bark. This provides airflow to the roots while holding light moisture. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, increasing pot size gradually as the plant matures.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser formulated for foliage plants. Avoid fertilising in winter. Regular feeding will encourage lush growth and maintain the deep green leaf colour.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune to maintain shape and encourage branching. Remove any yellow or damaged leaves near the base. Wipe the leaves with a soft, damp cloth or a natural leaf shine solution to remove dust and enhance their reflective gloss. Rotate periodically for even growth and balanced light exposure.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate to fast grower, Ficus ‘Robusta’ can reach 2–3 metres indoors, forming a strong central trunk and symmetrical canopy. Over time, it develops an elegant, tree-like form that becomes a true focal point. With the right light and humidity, it can produce new leaves consistently throughout the year.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Dropping leaves: Environmental changes, cold drafts, or underwatering.

  • Dull foliage: Low light or lack of cleaning.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or scale; treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Background and Benefits

Ficus elastica is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia and India, where it thrives in warm, humid forests. The ‘Robusta’ cultivar is one of the most popular houseplant selections, valued for its large, glossy leaves and resilient nature.

In addition to its beauty, Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ is also an excellent natural air purifier, filtering toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene from indoor air. Its upright form and deep green foliage bring structure and calm to modern interiors, offering both visual appeal and tangible health benefits.

Great engaging toy for my border collie
Color: Blue
I have an 8 yr old border collie with an injured rear hock, so she can't chase the Frisbee any longer. This toy, when set on high, kicks her hunting instincts in, and she chases it, brings it back, and keeps it between her paws until it activates *or she bumps it). The plastic 'holey' covering let's her get a good grip on it, and it is a little larger than a baseball. Good quality plastic/soft rubber covering. It charges quickly, and has unpredictable jumps and rolls unlike some others that just run on 1 track. She would play with it all day if I let her. She brings it to me to play with her, but it doesn't really need a human's intervention. A tooth will occasionally hit the small control and turn it off, but no concerns about it falling apart or her ripping it apart. Highly recomment

Not as durable as it could be, but fun
Color: Yellow
Our 55 lb lab has fun with this toy, but it's not lasting long. The ball itself is hard plastic and the yellow rubber wrap around it has already been chewed through n several places. It did come with a fabric cover, but that, too, is not durable. Would not recommend leaving with your dog unattended as they could eat the rubber off in no time. But to bring out occasionally while watching the dog, which is what we do, it does provide some fun for all!

Durable enough for my dog's tough play. She loves this interactive ball.
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I love these interactive ball toys. My dog gets so excited and engaged with them. I went through 3 of them that my dog destroyed in a short time. They simply were not durable enough for her tough play. So far, we have had this one for a few weeks, it is holding up and withstands her chewing and rough play, and she loves it. It keeps her busy for a long time.

Great toy for old dogs
Color: Yellow
Great to bring a old dog back to his old self. Have a 10 yr old who has a little shoulder pain but needs a little light excitement. This did the trick, he paws it a little and enjoys moving it around. It can take his biteing without breaking. Hopeing our small dog whos afraid of it will watch and get over her fear. She learns everything from him.

Updated: not worth it. Disappointed!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
Update: since I wrote my first review, I have to revise it. My puppy has chewed through the rubber case that surrounds the ball mechanism. I literally watched her chew through two sections in under a minute. I had to take it away from her and she’s so upset. I’m disappointed as it was a great distraction toy. Now it’s trash. Absolutely the best interactive dog toy. My 5 1/2 month old puppy loves this toy. It’s the perfect size for her. She rolls and chews on it happily. Unfortunately she also figured out how to remove the cover, the Velcro is not strong enough, but I’m fine with that. It kept her occupied for over 25 minutes after I gave it to her. It looks well made and additional extra ball cover was a surprise. It was worth the price. We live in an apartment and unfortunately when it’s turned it make a little noise on the tile floor, I just hope my downstairs neighbor doesn’t get upset.
