Rhaphidophora tetrasperma albo-variegata

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma albo-variegata is a white-to-cream variegated form of Rhaphidophora tetrasperma with split leaves and slender climbing stems. The variegation can appear as sectors, marbling or irregular pale patches across individual leaves.

The plant keeps the species’ aerial-rooting climbing habit, so vertical support is part of its normal indoor growth. Pale sectors need filtered light, careful watering and protection from direct sun to reduce browning and scorch.

Albo-variegata plant profile

  • Plant type: Variegated climbing aroid in the Araceae family.
  • Growth habit: Slender stems with aerial roots that attach to a support.
  • Leaves: Split Rhaphidophora tetrasperma foliage with white to cream variegation.
  • Pattern: Each leaf can differ in sector size, marbling and colour balance.
  • Support: A pole or trellis keeps the climbing stems upright as they extend.
  • Pale sectors: White and cream areas need protection from direct sun and drying stress.

White variegation and climbing growth

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma is a wet-tropical climber from Peninsular Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. The albo-variegated form adds white to cream patterning to the species’ split leaf blades, while the stem structure and aerial-root behaviour remain the same.

Variegation can differ between leaves and along the same stem. Repeated all-green growth can be cut back to a node with visible variegation, while very pale sections may brown faster after heat, dry roots or direct sun.

Care for Rhaphidophora tetrasperma albo-variegata

  • Light: Provide bright filtered light and shield white sectors from harsh direct sun.
  • Watering: Water after the upper substrate has partly dried, then let the pot drain fully.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity keeps new split leaves from drying during unfurling.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and stable, ideally above 18 °C.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice or lava.
  • Support: Attach young stems to a pole before they become long and loose.
  • Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced fertiliser at reduced strength.
  • Repotting: Repot when the root ball fills the pot and watering becomes difficult to regulate.
  • Mineral substrates: Established plants can adapt to inert substrates if oxygen stays available around the roots.
  • Pruning: Remove repeated all-green shoots from the same growth point if the pattern is lost there.

Albo-variegata issues

  • Brown white sectors: Direct sun, dry roots, heat stress or low humidity can mark pale tissue.
  • All-green growth: Cut back repeated green leaves to a patterned node on the same stem.
  • Yellowing: Check for dense wet substrate, root damage or sudden watering changes.
  • Soft stems: Cold wet substrate can damage roots and lower stem tissue.
  • Pests: Inspect new leaves and nodes for thrips, spider mites, scale and mealybugs.

Safety for Rhaphidophora tetrasperma albo-variegata

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma albo-variegata contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and small children, and avoid sap contact with sensitive skin.

Botanical note on albo-variegata

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma was described by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1893. The species epithet tetrasperma means “four-seeded” and refers to the berries; albo-variegata is grown as the white-to-cream variegated foliage form.

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma albo-variegata from Foliage Factory has split climbing foliage with white to cream patterning.

Really moisturizes hands
These gloves really work. My cuticles and hands alway seem dry. I used these gloves the first night I received them and my hands were really smooth afterward. When I get in bed at night, I play on my computer and iPad, and these gloves are perfect. The end of the index finger is designed to be used with a phone, computer, and iPad. Make sure you push the end of the fingers on the gloves all the way down to the end of your fingertips; otherwise you will not be able to use them with a device. I find they work better with my iPad than my computer. I have not tried to use with my phone. The gloves are not uncomfortable, but I found they are not comfortable to wear all night, so I just try to wear them about an hour every night. I wish I had these gloves about 20 years ago and my hands would probably look like a 20 year old.

So much pain
I had to remove these after less than 5 minutes as they caused such intense pain. The gel clings to your skin even with the lotion and tightens around your hands cutting off circulation. They have been off for about half an hour and my hands still hurt. I was so excited as I really like this brand in general. Very disappointed. Be very aware when buying.

Moisturizing Gloves That Actually Work
Over the years, I have tried so many different types of gloves to alleviate my dry skin. Since it especially bad on my hands I have tried everything. Of all the gloves I have purchased, this pair is head and shoulders above all the others. The first night I used these I could not believe the difference! It was astonishing. My hands were soft and supple for the first time in my life, and they stayed that way for most of the day. The moisturizing aspects of leaving humectants on one's skin for prolonged periods is really a game changer. They fit perfectly and can be pulled on with ease. The crazy bonus is that I was still able to use my phone once I was wearing them. That has never been the case with any of the other gloves I've used. If you have dry skin on your hands, you must try these. One night of use and you will be sold!

A bit small for one size fits all
Purchased these for my husband who has pretty severe dry skin in the winter. The gloves are great but they are a bit small. My husband doesn’t have very large hands (cadet size golfing gloves) & this hardly reaches his wrist so one size fits most is a bit of a stretch. However, these do the job & he likes them. We appreciate the packaging doubles as a reusable pouch.

Awful
I love this brand & expected more, especially for the price. the gloves are super bulky and uncomfortable. they’re hard to get on and off and have a strange feeling when on because of the gel lining. they also smell odd. i wore them so about a week with several different creams/balms/lotions etc. i woke up with them off multiple times which makes me know that i was uncomfortable in them during my sleep. they also caused a weird breakout on my hands up to my wrists that took over a week to go away with the help of cortisone. it was like hives but more rash like. i didn’t bother attempting to return them and decided to throw them out. waste of money, time & ended up with a rash at the end. they did make my hands softer and helped with my cracked skin but at what cost?
