Transform your garden into a vibrant, low-maintenance paradise with Ice Plant (Delosperma cooperi), a stunning succulent groundcover that bursts into neon-pink, magenta, or purple blooms under full sun. Perfect for home gardeners, rock garden enthusiasts, xeriscaping fans, and pollinator advocates, this hardy perennial offers year-round texture and seasonal brilliance. Its trailing habit and succulent foliage make it perfect for slopes, borders, rock gardens, and containers, adding color and life even in hot, dry conditions.

🌿 Plant Description
Ice Plant forms a dense mat of fleshy, evergreen leaves, typically spreading 12–18 inches wide and standing 4–6 inches tall, creating a lush, low-growing carpet. From late spring into early summer, it produces dazzling neon blooms that open in full sun and close at night or during overcast days, giving a dynamic, sparkling display that looks almost artificial in its brilliance. This succulent groundcover is highly heat- and drought-tolerant, making it a reliable choice for dry climates, poor soils, or sunny spots where other flowers struggle.

Its neon flowers are not just beautiful, they attract pollinators including bees and butterflies, helping support local ecosystems. Ice Plant’s succulent leaves store water, allowing it to thrive in rock gardens, slopes, and raised beds, reducing maintenance while still delivering dramatic visual appeal.

💡 Growing Tips & Care
Ice Plant is remarkably easy to grow from seed when given the right conditions:

  • Sowing: Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors in spring once soil has warmed.

  • Light: Full sun is essential for optimal flowering; partial shade may reduce bloom intensity.

  • Soil: Well-draining, sandy or rocky soil; avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas.

  • Watering: Minimal watering once established; water young seedlings lightly until they take root.

  • Spacing: Sow or thin to 8–12 inches apart for a lush groundcover effect.

  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9; protects from frost with mulch in cooler climates.

  • Maintenance: Trim back after flowering to encourage fresh growth and maintain shape.

This succulent adapts beautifully to containers, rockeries, or as a colorful edging plant, offering flexibility for both ornamental and practical landscaping designs.

🌸 Uses & Benefits

  • Groundcover & Erosion Control: Its dense growth stabilizes soil on slopes and prevents erosion.

  • Rock Gardens & Borders: Perfect for sunny, well-drained areas with limited water.

  • Pollinator-Friendly: Vibrant blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.

  • Container Gardening: Spreads and trails over the edges for a dramatic effect.

  • Drought-Tolerant Landscaping: Ideal for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens.

🌍 Unique Traits & Cultural Notes
Native to South Africa, Ice Plant has long been valued for its resilience and striking flowers, thriving where most other plants fail. Its succulent leaves store water and its flowers sparkle under bright sun, giving a “living jewel” effect that has made it a favorite among rock gardeners and pollinator-friendly landscape designers alike. Modern gardeners prize this plant for its combination of durability, neon-colored blooms, and low-maintenance habits, making it a forgotten gem revitalized for contemporary gardens.

Good to have if you've never seen the iTEP exam, but don't rely on it to boost your scores
Format: Paperback
This book is good in that it comes with two practice tests: one in the beginning of the book, one in the end of the book. The grading rubric is helpful too. However, the actual guide part of the book, doesn't help too much with how to improve test scores. What I like least about this guide is that it won't tell you which questions you answered incorrectly on the practice exams. A good test prep guide will tell you what you answered incorrectly, and will tell you what logic to follow to get to the correct answer. In the reading passages, it would be nice to know where I can find evidence to justify the "correct" answer. In the grammar section, it would be nice to know which rule I'm violating. Any test guide should always come with some testing strategies. I.E. If this question is taking up too much time, skip it and go to the next one. This guide lacks simple strategies like that. Simple strategies like that could be useful when incorporated into this guide because there are certain sections on the exam that you can go back to previous questions, but some sections where the "back" button is disabled. Overall, if you've never seen an iTEP exam before, this book is certainly helpful in that it will give you an idea of what you will be testing for. However, this book alone won't help you achieve a score of 6. The table of contents itself will tell you there are only 86 pages of actual content covering test material. That's not enough to cover how to excel in the exam.

Don't buy it
Format: Paperback
It does not prepare for the real test. Using it is absolutely not enough to be approved with good grades. Too expensive for what it offers.
