San Jose Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'San Jose')

San Jose Chinese Juniper, Juniperus chinensis 'San Jose', is a low, spreading evergreen shrub prized for its dense, blue green foliage and easygoing, wide ranging habit that ties sunny beds and slopes together with year round color. Broad, layered branches sweep outward and slightly upward, creating a soft, mounded form that drapes over edges, rocks, and walls. Durable and adaptable, it provides reliable structure, coverage, and a natural focal point in well drained, full sun sites.

Distinctive Features

San Jose Chinese Juniper typically matures around 1 to 2 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, forming a broad, low mound that spreads wider than it grows high. The foliage is a rich blue green, made up of fine, scale like needles held tightly to the stems, so the plant reads as a solid, textural mass from a distance. Branches radiate outward from the center and gently arch at the tips, softening hard lines along paths, drives, and retaining walls. Its combination of low height, substantial spread, and cool toned foliage makes it a natural choice where you want a tough evergreen that both covers ground and visually anchors the planting.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers full sun for best density and blue green color; light shade is tolerated but may lead to looser growth and a softer outline.
  • Soil: Thrives in average, well drained soils and adapts to sandy or rocky ground; avoid locations where water stands or soil stays consistently wet.
  • Water: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish deep roots, then provide only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
  • Hardiness: Well suited to many temperate regions when planted in full sun and good drainage.
  • Size: Low, spreading habit generally 1 to 2 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide at maturity.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate grower that steadily fills in to create a dense, weed suppressing evergreen mat over several seasons.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point Groundcover: Use near patios, paths, or boulders where its low, flowing habit and blue green foliage create a subtle focal point at ground level.
  • Slopes and Banks: Excellent for stabilizing sunny slopes, berms, and embankments where turf is difficult to maintain and erosion control is needed.
  • Rock and Gravel Gardens: Natural fit for rock gardens, dry riverbeds, and gravel plantings where it weaves between stones and softens hard edges.
  • Foundation and Front of Border: Plant at the front of mixed borders and along foundations to provide a neat evergreen edge that frames perennials and flowering shrubs.
  • Along Walks and Drives: Effective as a low edging along walks and driveways, offering year round color without blocking views or requiring mowing.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: After establishment, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings to encourage deep, drought tolerant roots.
  • Pruning: Requires minimal pruning; lightly trim stray or overhanging shoots in late winter or early spring to keep edges clean and off paths, steps, or hardscape.
  • Fertilizing: In average garden soils, a light application of a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring is usually sufficient if growth appears thin.
  • Mulching: Apply a thin layer of mulch around new plantings to suppress weeds and conserve moisture, keeping mulch off the stems; mature plants often act as their own living mulch.
  • Protection: Choose a sunny, well drained site and avoid spots where water collects or where snow and ice slide off roofs directly onto plants.

Why Choose San Jose Chinese Juniper?

  • Attractive Blue Green Foliage: Cool toned needles provide pleasing contrast to warmer stone, brick, and flowering plants.
  • Low, Spreading Habit: Forms a broad, ground hugging mound that covers bare soil and ties plantings together without adding height.
  • Year Round Coverage: Evergreen foliage keeps borders, slopes, and edges looking finished in every season.
  • Tough and Adaptable: Handles full sun, lean soils, and periods of drought once established, with modest ongoing care.
  • Design Versatility: Works in rock gardens, slopes, front of border plantings, and along drives wherever you need a durable, low evergreen that also provides quiet focal point structure.

With its low, spreading form, blue green foliage, and rugged, easy care nature, San Jose Chinese Juniper is a dependable choice for adding structure, coverage, and a refined ground level focal point to sunny, well drained landscapes.

Whistle away my friend!
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Pack of 2
Love it! My dog loves it! The people at the dog park love it! The whistle is the best thing about these balls but the hard durable rubber and the denseness of the ball really make it fly. Let me quickly breakdown each of these: First the sound is like a...well, whistle coming from a human but oscillating and slightly different. It helps the dogs track where it goes and helps them find it better when it is getting dark (while flying of course, not when it is stationary). It barely makes a sound when throwing it with the wind but really howls when throwing it into the wind. This is why you get this ball and most everyone at the dog park perks up and wonders what that is, asks about it, and thinks it is very cool; which it is! Next is the durable rubber which doesn't have a single bite mark or split yet in 4 months of constant daily play for about 1 1/2 hours every day! The dog chews it as he brings it back and other dogs steal the ball and run with it while "killing" it perpetually and it has held up great. I don't claim this is going to be Kong ball durable but it is very well chosen rubber. Last is the denseness of the ball which really makes to go far in a chuckit launcher. One doesn't really notice how far this goes until going back to a tennis ball and realizing how short a tennis ball goes compared to this. The whistler ball, and presumably other chuckit rubber balls (glow, irregular bounce), go 30-40% farther when I throw then using the longest chuckit thrower. This is excellent and wears my retriever out even faster; not to mention the rippling muscles he has from sprinting that whole way! Overall I got both ball several months ago and we started with the blue ball and haven't had to touch the orange one yet. This is his goto ball at the park and it is the most popular ball, bar none, for all the dogs to steal. The bright blue aspect, the rubber aspect, the sound, and exclusivity of it make it coveted by dogs and owners. I might be gushing and glowing over this ball a bit much but I tend to do that when something unexpected ends up being part of your everyday life and blows you away at how wonderful it is.

Great for dogs that are chewers
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Pack of 2
These are wonderful for our dog. The bright colors help us find them when our dog can't. The size is perfect to play fetch. Our dog will chew on it a bit and it stays together and does not fall apart. That is a big bonus because our dog is a chewer!

It's A Whistler!
Size: Medium (Pack of 1), Style: Pack of 1
This Chuckit! Whistler Ball is basically a regular fetch toy that decided to become an annoying little teakettle mid-air. My dog goes absolutely nuts for it—every throw sounds like a tiny referee is shrieking "foul!" the whole way across the yard. He chases it harder than he chases the mailman, and bonus: I can actually find it in tall grass because it's screaming for help. Super bouncy, tough enough that he hasn't destroyed it yet (miracle), and now our walks sound like a low-budget horror movie.
