S. arboricola is commonly referred to as the dwarf umbrella tree and is native to Taiwan, Australia, and Hainan. The plant grows up to 25 to 30 feet tall with palmately compound leaves. Leaves are shiny green and have 7 to 9 leaflets. Flowers bloom from midsummer to autumn and are clusters of short flower stalks that meet at a central point. The flowers are red and yellow to green in color and have both male and female organs. This species is grown as an ornamental plant for its tolerance to harsh growing conditions and neglect. Full sun to partial shade sitting in well-draining soil is an ideal environment to keep Schefflera arboricola. Water adequately when dry, allowing the soil to dry in between waterings. All parts of the plant are considered to be toxic and should not be consumed by humans or domesticated animals. USDA plant hardiness zone 10b to 12a. 

Soak the Schefflera arboricola seeds for 12 hours in warm water prior to planting for best results. After soaking, plant the seeds ⅛ to ¼ inch deep into a well-draining potting soil. Sown seeds require consistent moisture and humidity but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Keep sown seeds between 75°F to 85°F for best results. Germination typically takes 5 to 6 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
