Scientific Name: Dioscorea alata, aka: Elephantodon eburnea, Greater yam, Guyana Arrowroot.

Get ready to grow your very own vibrant Ube! These are True Purple Yam plants, perfect for cultivating at home for use in your favorite recipes.

Just to be clear, these are NOT purple sweet potatoes – they're a unique botanical treasure! You'll love their distinctive, twisted-looking vines and the impressive, nutritious yams they produce. What's even more fascinating is that these yams can stay quietly growing underground for several years, continuing to increase in size before harvest – truly a hard-to-find, incredibly popular plant that's ready to add a splash of color to your garden!

Features

  • Remarkably Resilient: This is a wonderfully prolific plant! Its rhizomes can be easily divided, helping you produce even more plants to enjoy. It's surprisingly tough, able to withstand temperatures as low as 22ºF while dormant.
  • Self-Pollinating: No need for a partner here! This tree is wonderfully self-fertile.
  • Stunning Aesthetics: Prepare for a tropical paradise in your own backyard! Its lush, abundant, gorgeous deep green foliage creates an exotic vibe and makes a truly stunning garden centerpiece.
  • Drought-Tolerant Champion: This plant is a trooper, happily enduring hot, humid temperatures and even dry spells. Just remember, it's not a fan of too much water!

Perfect Growing Zones Ube absolutely thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 7b-11. If your home falls within these zones, congratulations—this fantastic plant is truly a perfect fit for you! Grows year-round indoors.

Culinary Uses Oh, where to begin with Ube, the famous purple yam! A true staple in Filipino cuisine, Ube is making a delicious splash in American food trends, too. It offers a wonderfully unique, sweet, nutty flavor and that absolutely captivating, vibrant purple hue. You'll find Ube bringing its magic to all sorts of dishes, from delightful desserts to savory sensations!

Dessert Delights:

  • Ube Ice Cream: A creamy, cool, and incredibly popular treat.
  • Ube Cakes: Known for their moist texture and beautiful purple color, often paired with macapuno (a special type of coconut).
  • Ube Mochi: Chewy, delightfully purple, and utterly delicious.
  • Ube Milk Tea/Ube Flurry: A trendy and tasty drink featuring that unmistakable ube flavoring.
  • Ube Pancakes/Waffles: Add vibrant color and unique flavor to your breakfast favorites.
  • Ube Custard Cake/Puffs: Infuses a wonderful flavor into these sweet, custardy creations.
  • Ube Halaya: A delightful jam or spread, perfect for toast or as a dessert on its own.
  • Ube in Halo-Halo: Adds a unique taste and eye-catching color to this beloved layered dessert.

Savory Surprises:

  • Ube in Bread/Pancakes: Incorporate ube into your savory bread or pancake dough for a twist.
  • Ube in Soups/Pasta: Experiment by adding ube as a flavorful component to savory dishes like soups or pasta.
  • Ube in Croquettes: A fun way to include ube in a croquette or other savory recipe.
  • Did you know tubers may also be processed into flour or starch? Plus, purple yams can be boiled, mashed, fried, or baked – just like your favorite potatoes or even turned into delicious fries! They're fantastic in stews, stir-fries, and soups. And, in the Philippines, they are often transformed into flour, frequently used in creating exquisite desserts. Ube powder is also a wonderful way to create that vibrant purple color in your Instagram-worthy foods, from candies and rice to cakes, desserts, and jams!

Nutritional & Botanical Highlights Ube, or purple yam, is celebrated for its wonderful nutritional profile and the unique compounds that contribute to its vivid purple color.

  • Rich in Key Nutrients: Purple yams are a good source of vitamin C.
  • Contains Anthocyanins: Like other blue-pigmented berries and purple vegetables, ube contains anthocyanins, which are natural plant compounds with antioxidant properties responsible for its beautiful color.
  • Complex Carbohydrates: Purple yams are full of complex carbohydrates and resistant starch (a type of starch that resists digestion in the small intestine).

Growth Habits & Best Practices

  • Impressive Height: This lush tropical beauty can climb up to an amazing 100 feet when given a trellis!
  • Light Preference: Loves the sun but is quite adaptable and can tolerate partial shade.
  • Soil: Keeps this plant happy with rich, well-draining soil.
  • Dormancy: In winter, typically from late November or early December, plants in zones 1-7 may enter a dormant phase until around March or April. The foliage might wither, dry, and disappear, but don't worry—the roots stay cozy underground unless they experience a prolonged, deep freeze. In zones 7-11, it grows as a perennial!
  • Propagation: Ube propagates from vine cuttings easily by growing roots in water or directly planting in soil using a root stimulator.
  • Where to Plant: A sunny or dappled light location in your backyard is perfect, especially with a sturdy trellis or a friendly tree for the vines to climb on! But don't worry, it's adaptable enough to thrive in a sunny room inside your house, too!

Planting Guide Once Roots are Established

  • Dig a hole as wide as your pot or plant rhizome, aiming for approximately 2-4 inches deep.
  • Carefully remove your plant or rhizome and place it in the hole.
  • Fill the hole with soil, and give it a good, generous watering to help it settle in.
  • If you're in zones lower than 7, remember to bring your potted plant inside for winter protection.
  • Container Planting: For containers, plant 2-3 inches deep in a good quality, well-draining potting mix.

Care Routine

  • Give it regular watering, but make sure to let the soil dry out nicely between waterings.
  • Keep it happy by fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer every year.
  • Fun Facts: Did you know there's a Ube Festival? It's a popular annual celebration of all things UBE! Humans have known and appreciated Ube since ancient times, truly a plant with a long and storied past.

Ideal For

  • Home gardeners in warm regions who love unique and visually stunning plants.
  • Gardeners eager to add eye-catching and productive plants to their landscape.
  • Anyone interested in self-sufficiency and growing their own sustainable, nutrient-dense food sources that can continue to grow underground for years!

🚫 Not Ideal For

  • Those residing in frigid regions below USDA Zone 5, unless you can bring a potted plant indoors for winter protection.
  • Gardeners who don't have enough sun or a suitable trellis for climbing vines.

Impressive after first use! Cooling and hydrating!
Update: I used too much product and it will pill. I knew I shouldn’t reapply more, but something in this serum is soothing and cooling to my under eye skin. Immediately feels cooling and hydrating around my eyes - feels so good! This soothing feeling lingers for several minutes. I am suffering with allergies at this time and the cool metal tip is soothing and the shape contours well to my eye area. I am applying this under my eyes and to the eyelid area. The formula absorbs quickly. The pics I am including are from the first use and then approximately 10 minutes after application. The difference is SUBTLE, but this is ONE use and only 10 minutes later and I can already see that there is a change, likely temporary. Within this short amount of time, some of the puffiness has subsided and a few fine lines are diminished. I was just outside weed whacking and I’m a mess. I’m certain this will perform even better when used after washing my face and as a part of my skincare routine. I plan to use in the am and pm until the I finish the tube. What I am expecting according to Paula’s Choice information is for my fine lines to diminish and for my eyelids to be less saggy after 4 weeks of consistent use. I hope to have a follow up review with excellent results - fingers crossed - you can see my tired and puffy eyes need all the help they can get! The packaging design makes application easy due to the slender tube that is easy to hold while applying the peptide eye serum with the ergonomic, cooling metal tip. The cap has an insert to keep the product from drying out which is another positive aspect to the packaging. The formula has Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 & Tridecapeptide-1, Lysine Polypeptides, and Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract. It’s worth your time to do some quick research on the benefits of these ingredients to understand what they do. I don’t want to write a novel here in a review.

Excellent 30 minute depuff. Cruelty free science-backed formula. Skip the applicator gimmick.
I’ve been using this eye cream for two weeks, and the results are impressive for morning maintenance. Within 30 minutes of application, I can see the "just woke up" puffiness settle down and the skin start to tighten. It absorbs quickly and leaves a slight shine so you know exactly where you’ve applied it, but it dries down without any tacky or restrictive feeling. While I'd never heard of Paula (Paula Begoun - "cosmetic cop") before, or whatever she was choosing, I am well versed in the world of eye serum. As someone with chronic allergies and a genetic predisposition for dark circles I'm always on the lookout for a treatment that works. After researching I found that Paula’s Choice is well-known for their "Smart, Safe, Effective" philosophy, and this serum reflects that. It’s formulated with a heavy-hitting mix of peptides and antioxidants that focus on skin repair. Crucially for me, the brand is Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free and entirely fragrance-free, which is a must for the sensitive skin around the eyes. While the brand isn’t 100% vegan (some products use animal by-products like beeswax), this product IS, is and they are transparent about their sourcing. This particular serum feels incredibly "clean" and non-irritating. The metal applicator is well-contoured for the under-eye area and feels great initially, though it does have a learning curve. It warms up quickly against the skin, and it can be hard to judge how much pressure to use when it’s pressed against your face. I’ve found the best method is to squeeze the serum onto the applicator before touching it to your skin to ensure you get the right amount. Honestly, squeezing a pea sized amount onto your finger and skipping the applicator all together may be the play. I know no cream is a "cure-all." However, for managing daily puffiness and noticeably firming the skin, this is an excellent serum that delivers on its promises without the "fluff" of unnecessary perfumes or harsh additives.

Cooling applicator feels great and the serum layers well under makeup
I’ve tried quite a few eye creams and serums over the years, and this one definitely feels more premium than most. The lightweight gel-serum texture absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave my under-eye area greasy or sticky, which is important because I usually apply concealer shortly after my skincare routine. It sits nicely under makeup and I haven’t noticed any pilling as long as I use a small amount. The cooling metal applicator is honestly one of my favorite parts of this product. I keep it in the fridge sometimes and it feels especially nice in the morning when my eyes look tired or puffy. The applicator glides smoothly around the eye area and helps depuff a bit even before the serum fully absorbs. After a couple of weeks of consistent use, I’ve noticed my under-eye area looks a little more hydrated and smoother, especially with fine lines that tend to look worse when my skin is dry. I wouldn’t call the results dramatic, but my eyes do look more refreshed overall. The fragrance-free formula is also a big plus since a lot of eye products irritate my skin or make my eyes water. The only downside for me is the price. The product works well and feels high quality, but $39 for a half ounce is definitely on the expensive side. Thankfully you only need a tiny amount each use, so the tube should last a while. Overall, I think it’s a solid eye serum if you’re looking for hydration, mild firming, and a soothing cooling application experience.

SPF ☀️ for Everyday Use 🧴🌸
Color: Tinted, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Color: Tinted, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I’ve been using this SPF for almost 2 years now and I still love it! The tint adjusts beautifully to my skin tone and gives such a natural, healthy glow without looking heavy or greasy. It applies so smoothly, feels lightweight, and has a very pleasant smell. Most importantly, it doesn’t break me out at all, which is super important for my sensitive skin. I wear it almost every day and it works perfectly under makeup too. The packaging is also super convenient and easy to use, especially for everyday skincare and travel. Definitely one of the best sunscreens I’ve ever tried — worth every penny!

My favorite Sunscreen
Color: Tinted, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Color: Tinted, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I’ve been using La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen SPF 40 for a few years now, and it’s still one of my favorite daily sunscreens. The formula is truly lightweight and absorbs quickly without feeling greasy or heavy on the skin. It layers well under makeup and doesn’t leave a noticeable white cast, which I really appreciate. I also like that it provides reliable sun protection while still feeling comfortable enough for everyday use. Even after trying other sunscreens over the years, I keep coming back to this one because it works so well for my skin. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a lightweight, non-greasy daily sunscreen.
