Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem'

Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' is a dark-petioled variant of the Philippine species Alocasia zebrina, grown for glossy arrow-shaped leaves held on deep burgundy, dark brown or espresso-toned stems. It keeps the upright zebrina habit, with dark vertical petioles rising below clean green blades.

The plant grows from a corm and builds a narrow upright shape with leaves lifted above the pot. Mature blades are glossy green, sagittate and carried on long petioles that can darken strongly as the plant matures. Some stems reveal red-brown or burgundy tones in the sheaths and younger tissue.

Dark petioles and glossy green blades

The petiole colour separates Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' from the typical striped zebrina look. Stems can range from dark burgundy and deep brown to espresso-black on mature growth. Colour may vary with plant age, light and individual growth. The leaf blades stay green, glossy and arrow-shaped, with a smooth surface and pointed lobes.

New leaves emerge from a tight spear and lift above the base as the petiole elongates. The dark stems remain visible beneath the foliage, giving the plant strong vertical lines. Indoor plants often reach around 60–120 cm tall with maturity, with final size shaped by warmth, root volume, light and corm strength.

  • Leaf shape: glossy sagittate leaves with pointed lobes and an upright presentation.
  • Stem colour: deep burgundy, dark brown, espresso or blackish petioles on mature growth.
  • Growth habit: upright, corm-forming growth with long petioles and a narrow base.
  • Indoor size: medium to tall in pots, often around 60–120 cm once established.
  • Visible contrast: dark stems, green blades and a strong vertical line from the pot upward.

Zebrina context and Black Stem form

Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' belongs under the cultivated zebrina group. The species Alocasia zebrina is accepted from the Philippines and is known for glossy sagittate leaves and patterned petioles. In this dark-stem form, the petioles develop deeper pigment, while the growth habit remains corm-based, upright and warm-growing.

Because the plant carries a corm and long petioles, indoor care needs to keep roots active and stems firm. Filtered daylight keeps the plant upright, warmth keeps the corm active, and an airy substrate prevents moisture from lingering around the base. The darker stems look strongest when the plant grows evenly and replaces leaves steadily through active months.

Growing dark-stem zebrina

  • Light: steady bright light out of harsh sun keeps green leaves firm and petiole colour deep. Gentle morning sun can suit acclimated plants, while hot direct sun can mark the blades.
  • Water: water once the upper 25–35% of the mix has dried. The corm grows strongly with even moisture followed by complete drainage.
  • Substrate: use an open aroid mix with bark, pumice or perlite, coco fibre and a small moisture-retentive fraction. The lower mix needs airflow after watering.
  • Humidity: aim for 60–80% humidity for smooth leaf expansion and fewer dry tips. A humidifier or warm grouped plant area helps large new leaves expand evenly.
  • Temperature: keep the plant at 20–28 °C in the growing season, with nights above 18 °C. Warmth around the pot keeps the corm active.
  • Feeding: feed lightly while the plant is actively growing with diluted complete fertiliser. Regular low-strength feeding suits large leaves and long petioles.

Potting, dark stems and seasonal growth

A balanced pot is important as the plant gains height. Use a draining inner pot and a heavier outer pot if the tall petioles make the plant lean. Repot once roots fill the current container or the mix loses structure. A measured pot increase helps the corm expand while the mix dries at a healthy pace.

The dark stems show marks, dust and mineral residue clearly. Wipe leaves gently and brush petioles with a soft dry brush if substrate particles collect on the sheaths. Keep water from sitting in the base after cleaning. Rotate the pot as the plant produces new leaves so new petioles rise evenly around the centre.

Growth can slow when winter light drops. During this seasonal pause, lengthen the interval between waterings and keep the plant warm. Older leaves may yellow after a new leaf opens or after a change in conditions. Propagation is by offsets or corms with active growth points, started warm and humid in a small airy pot.

Dark petioles under strain

  • Yellowing leaves: several yellowing leaves together usually point to excess moisture, cold roots or a tired mix. Check the lower pot and base firmness.
  • Soft petiole bases: softness near the base means moisture has lingered around the corm. Refresh the mix and keep the plant warm during recovery.
  • Edge browning: dry air, heat load or fertiliser salts can mark the leaves. Lift humidity and run plain water through the mix to reduce residue.
  • Weak stem colour: dim light can soften growth and reduce colour depth. Increase filtered brightness gradually.
  • Mite and thrips damage: sap-feeding pests can mark leaf backs and new spears. Inspect undersides, base folds and petiole bases often.

Handling dark zebrina petioles

Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' contains irritating oxalate crystals in the leaves, petioles and corm. Chewed leaves or petioles may cause mouth and throat irritation, drooling, swelling, vomiting or swallowing difficulty. Keep the plant away from pets and children, and wash hands after pruning or dividing.

Dark stems on zebrina

Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' is a cultivated dark-petioled variant of Alocasia zebrina. The species name zebrina refers to the zebra-like petiole pattern of the typical Philippine species, while 'Black Stem' describes the deeper petiole colour of this cultivated form. The plant remains connected to the zebrina group through its upright corm growth, glossy arrow-shaped leaves and long petioles.

Dark petioles and clean green blades give Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' a sharp vertical contrast.

Great starter speakers - for the right price.
Size: Pair
A good all-around pair of starter speakers if you're planning on using them as standalones. These will have zero trouble filling a small to medium sized space with rich and detailed sound at low to mid volumes. The bass is adequate for their size. They're not going to knock your socks off on more thumpy genres. I would imagine pairing them with a subwoofer would make quite the difference but for rock and some synth pop, they're pretty sweet. Plus the copper woofers look very striking without the faceplates. That said, I say these are best suited at low to mid volumes because cranked, the higher frequencies can be awfully fatiguing coming out of these speakers. I would not pay anywhere close to the $349 MSRP for these (you can probably find a pair of far superior RP-600Ms for around that price nowadays). Around $150 seems like a sweet spot for the R-51Ms, but the Sony SSCS5s and Fluance Signature bookshelfs are very comparable, if not better sounding for around the same price. Still, these will probably more than satisfactory if you're not expecting to be blown away by them. UPDATE 5/20/25: Can confirm that the subwoofer made a big difference. I was going to retire these since I replaced them with some bigger floor speakers on my main setup but I decided to try them out in place of the factory speakers on the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 I have hooked up to my computer. Not only does the onboard amp seem to drive them okay at not-insane levels of volume - they sound really sweet paired with the 6.5-inch subwoofer. While I won't change my rating, I do highly recommend getting a sub along with these speakers.

Great speakers, rich full sound
Size: Pair
These are really great speakers. I got them to go with my husband's new record player for Christmas. These really sound fantastic. A rich range, with a nice bass that's not too much. They were easy to connect to the player. I like a rich sound better then bright (I think if it's too bright it doesn't have enough bass), and these definitely fit the bill. I got these on a black Friday deal which was even better. They are a good value for the quality.

The new amp/speaker configuration made a very noticeably positive difference.
Size: Pair, Size: Pair
I bought a Denton amp / Klipsch 7 speaker bundle for Christmas last year. It sounded impressive. For this year, I recently replace the Denon AVR-S970H, a 5.2.2 POS-Amp that quit after less than a year. Then I also added a 70” TV and a set of R-51M’s on the sides. I could never hear this amp driving the Dolby Atmos speakers on top of the R-625FA towers, so I decided that back speakers would be more beneficial to this 7-channel system. I’d been using the R-41M’s that came in the bundle as side surround speakers, but I was thinking that they would be more suited for use in back. So I replaced them with a new set of R-51M’s that I thought would be better surround sides because of their fuller stronger sound. As of now, at the front of this theater system is an Onkyo TX-RZ 820 AVR amp, a 70 inch LED 4K smart TV, a set of Klipsch R-625FA towers, an R-52C Center Channel Speaker, and two R-12SW Subwoofers. For the surround sides is the newly purchased set of R-51M’s on stands, and mounted on the back-wall is the set of R-41M’s, using BS-218pro Wall Mounts. For good reason, this is a very powerful amp driving a complete set of purely Klipsch speakers. I built this THX 7.2.0 surround sound system to go in my wife’s 11’ X 12’ privacy room, specifically because she is hard of hearing. She said, that with the new additions, the sound is much cleaner, stronger, the 3D surround effect is more noticeable, and the vocals are easier for her to understand. I get to use it sometimes when she’s not at home. Thunder in movies sounds as crisp sharp and loud as real thunder. All around, the system is very realistic sounding. And it can play music, shaking the house at live levels. At present, my wife and I are extremely happy with this system. It sounds as good as it looks. The Klipsch speakers & Onkyo amp configuration makes a very noticeably positive difference.

Quality shrink tubing.
Size: 4.8mm (3/16") - 26Ft, Color: Black
This seems to be solid quality shrink tubing, shrinks well, and holds firmly. I have used it for a few projects so far and am happy with how it has performed. The package is larger than I expected, but keeps the tubing from being damaged from bends/kinks.

I recently tried out the TKDMR Heat Shrink Tubing, and it has proven to be a game-changer in my cable management endeavors! As an OCD handyman who values organization and neatness, I was on the lookout for a reliable solution to streamline my cable/wire setups, and this product exceeded my expectations in everyway. *Ease of shrink (5/5):* One of the best features of the heat shrink tubing is its ease of application. The tubing is remarkably pliable, easy to cut and straightforward to work with. The simple process involves sliding the tubing over the cable and applying heat, whether from a heat gun, lighter or even a hairdryer! The tubing quickly shrinks snugly around the cable, providing a tight and professional-looking finish. Even for those new to DIY cable management, the learning curve is minimal. *Versatility (5/5):* I was pleasantly surprised by the versatility of this heat shrink tubing. It accommodated various cable sizes and shapes, making it a versatile solution for a range of applications. Whether dealing with computer cables, audio cords, electrical box wiring or even small electronic components, the tubing adapted to the different sizes seamlessly. The only slight drawback is that extreme size differences between cables might require different tubing sizes for an optimal fit, This tubing is rather large, but shrinks very small when done carefully. I have fixed many action figures and dinosaurs' broken arms to the delight of my son! *Durability (5/5):* Once applied, the heat shrink tubing forms a durable and resilient layer around the cables. It provides an added layer of thick protection against water, wear/tear, etc. safeguarding cables from potential damage due to friction, bending, or exposure. This durability is incredibly beneficial for long-term use and in environments where cables may be subject to constant movement or handling. Especially useful for reinforcing phone charging cords! I'm looking at you cheap apple cords. *Looks (5/5):* Beyond its practical usage, TKDMR Heat Shrink Tubing significantly enhances the aesthetics of cable management. The tubing creates a sleek and uniform appearance, concealing multiple cables into a tidy bundle. The matte finish looks professional and modern, elevating the overall visual appeal of any setup. It's a small detail that makes a big difference, especially for those who value a clean and organized workspace, or computer cable management! *Value for your hard earned Money (5/5):* Considering the improvement it brings to cable management and the quality of the product, this Heat Shrink Tubing offers excellent value for money. The quantity provided in each package is generous, ( a little goes a long way) and the overall durability ensures that one application will last for years. While the initial cost may be slightly higher than alternative cable management solutions like zip ties etc., the long-term protection benefits make it a worthwhile investment. *Overall Impressions:* TKDMR Heat Shrink Tubing has proven to be a highly effective and reliable solution for many purposes. Its ease of shrink, versatility, durability, and aesthetic enhancements make it a awesome product in the market. Whether you're a tech enthusiast, DIY enthusiast, or just someone looking to tidy up your living or working space, this heat shrink tubing is a must-have! Not to mention the satisfying process of shrinking tubes onto wires. I recommend this heat shrink tubing to anyone seeking a practical and visually pleasing solution for cable organization/wiring maintenance!
