Philodendron 'Prince of Orange'

Philodendron 'Prince of Orange' is a self-heading Philodendron grown for its colour-changing new leaves. Fresh growth opens bright orange, then moves through apricot and yellow-green before maturing to medium green. The colour is strongest on new leaves, so the plant carries its warmest tones at the centre of active growth rather than across every older leaf.

This cultivar forms a compact rosette-like crown with short internodes and thick petioles. It does not need a moss pole to show its natural shape. The leaves rise from a central growing point, creating a full plant that suits pot culture well when the roots are kept aerated and the crown is not buried too deeply.

Orange new leaves and a self-heading crown

  • Growth habit: Self-heading Philodendron with a compact crown and very short internodes.
  • Leaf colour: New leaves emerge orange, then mature through apricot and yellow-green into green.
  • Leaf shape: Narrowly ovate leaves with a glossy surface and entire margins.
  • Support needs: No climbing support required; the plant is naturally crown-forming.

Patent background and leaf colour stages

USPP6797, “Philodendron plant named Prince of Orange,” was filed on 21 January 1988 and published on 16 May 1989. The patent describes a stocky, compact, self-heading Philodendron with bright orange new leaves maturing through apricot and yellow-green to green.

The patent names Howard N. Miller as inventor and Cora McColley of Orlando, Florida as assignee. Its breeding background is complex, involving Philodendron domesticum, Philodendron erubescens, Philodendron wendlandii, Philodendron imbe and Philodendron cannifolium within the breeding line. The resulting plant is a compact self-heading Philodendron selected for warm new-leaf colour, short internodes and a rosette-like crown.

The colour change is normal leaf development. Older green leaves are the mature stage of the leaf, while the strongest orange appears on fresh growth. Very harsh light can scorch new leaves, and weak conditions usually slow the production of fresh colour.

Care for orange new growth and compact crowns

  • Light: Give bright, indirect light to support healthy new growth. Avoid hot direct sun, especially on fresh orange leaves.
  • Watering: Water when the upper substrate has dried. The compact crown is sensitive to waterlogged roots, so drainage matters more than frequent watering.
  • Substrate: Use an airy aroid mix with bark, perlite or pumice and a moisture-retentive organic base. The mix should drain freely while staying lightly moist after watering.
  • Humidity: Moderate household humidity is usually tolerated, but steadier humidity helps new leaves expand smoothly from the crown.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally 18–27°C. Avoid cold wet conditions around the roots.
  • Potting: Use a pot with drainage and avoid burying the crown. Repot only when roots fill the pot, moving up gradually in size.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. A gentle, regular feed supports leaf production without pushing soft, weak growth.

Colour, crown and root issues to check

  • Older leaves turning green: This is normal maturity. Look at the colour of new growth when judging the plant’s condition.
  • Weak orange colour on new leaves: Check whether the plant is too cool or too far from bright indirect light. New growth shows the clearest colour when growth is active.
  • Yellowing lower leaves: Check root moisture, drainage and pot size. A dense wet mix can stress the roots.
  • Brown marks on new leaves: Move the plant away from direct sun or intense grow lights. Soft new tissue damages easily.
  • Crown rot risk: Keep water out of the central crown and avoid planting too deeply. Good airflow around the crown helps after watering.

Pet safety and handling

Philodendron 'Prince of Orange' is not pet-safe and should not be ingested. Leaves, stems and sap contain calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth, throat and digestive tract. Keep trimmed leaves away from pets and wash hands after pruning.

Name origin and botanical background

Philodendron is an aroid genus in the family Araceae, with a name derived from Greek words meaning “loving trees”. The cultivar name 'Prince of Orange' refers directly to the orange colour of the emerging leaves, the colour of the emerging leaves.

Philodendron 'Prince of Orange' forms a compact self-heading crown with orange new leaves that mature through warm green tones.

WORTH IT!!
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Fresh
After debating for a few weeks, I finally bought this interior cleaner hoping it would be better than the other stuff I had been using. I just got a new vehicle and really want to keep it detailed and nice. This stuff is FANTASTIC!! It made the whole cleaning process easier. I am a mom to 6 kids and between everyday school trips and busy sports seasons, the dirt and wear can add up QUICK. I needed something worth the money and to make my cleaning process easier and worth my time in this very busy season of life. It leaves a nice finish without any streaks or oily appearance. It dried in a timely manner and my Suburban looks and smells wonderful.

Nice Interior Cleaner / No Residue and No Shine
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Fresh
Most people knock Chemical Guys and it appears a rather basic , not boutique, car care line. This is one hit in the line and actually comes in at least three versions based upon the scent left after use. This one is a baby powder scent that does not linger too long nor to heavy. The cleaning power is light with no streaks. It dries quickly and does not appear to leave any markings. A light spritz on doors, dash, and interior parts and a quick wipe with MF. You could use a dampen towel also. It leaves behind no shine or dressing afterwards which is wonderful for those wanting a fresh like new appearance without the shine or goopy sticky mess.

Very nice look and perfect "sheen"..
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Fresh
I've been an avid detailer for 30 years. And I do love the chemicals aspect of it. I've tried many products, and the vast majority of them aren't very good. Mind you, I was starting out detailing back in the 80's, when you had a VERY limited amount of products to rely on (And yes, I remember the very first days of Armor-All when it would CRACK your dash.. Those days are, of course, long gone. But I have been a big fan of Chemical Guy's products, and have written many reviews on here about their other products. This Total Interior, I have to say, has met or exceeded my expectations. Tip and note: Always wear nitrile type gloves whenever using any chemicals for detailing, repair, etc A garage isn't complete without nitrile gloves and an air compressor.. Enough on that. First off, they say you can use it on glass, and this would replace a lot of other cleaners and protectants, I'm not sure I would use anything to clean glass other than Invisible Glass. I've tried them all, and to me, Invisible Glass is my go-to and ONLY glass cleaner. Secondly, this DOES have a UV protectant in it, which of course, led me to purchase this. I've said on here before that if you are going to take the time to detail, and make the effort, you should not waste your time with products (Especially interior products) that don't protect the interior from UV damage.. The sun is a killer on leather and plastic.. (And paint, over time).. So if you're going to use any products on your interior make sure they have UV protectants. Thirdly, they say you can use this on Leather. I for one, after working with it, probably wouldn't use it on my leather, I prefer some other products for that, and yes, don't bother using ANY leather treatment unless it has a UV protectant in it, or at least follow it up with something that DOES have a UV protectant. I personally wouldn't use this on my leather. I would use Chemical Guys' Sprayable Leather Cleaner and Conditioner (no UV protectant), and then follow it with Klasse Interior as the Klasse has a UV protectant. The Klasse is also a water based formula (The original was oil based) and it also helps to tighten the leather a bit too.. Those two in combination make a nice look. What's nice about this Total Interior Cleaner Protectant (TICP) is the way it goes on. You want to use a fairly deep piled Microfiber cloth to apply it. Pre wet the cloth with distilled water in a spray bottle. Spray the TICP generously on the interior doors and plastics. It works especially well cleaning off your armrests and control modules for windows, door locks. I would generously spray it on the door panels and work it in, but I would not spray it directly on my speaker grills or into the control buttons, you want to work around that. For those areas, after you do the general door panels, or interior, and then come back and spray on your towel, and then hit the specific areas. For the front dash, and the LCD screen, I sprayed onto my pre moistened towel, worked it in nicely, then I quickly grabbed another microfiber towel that didn't have a "pile" on it. Almost like those microfiber dishtowels. The reason why is when you go for that quick buff (And just a quick buff, that's all you need) you can and will create some static.. And when you create that static you'll break off peach fuzz off a piled microfiber cloth and it may stick due to the static. So use a microfiber towel with no pile on it and quickly buff it, you don't need much, this product is "hot" and dries fairly quickly, a couple swipes, that's it. I did get the baby oil scent, and it's reminiscent of that, but not too strong or overdone. A nice fragrance. It comes in a couple other scents. The final look is very nice, it's not a shine or a heavy sheen, it's in between the OEM flat look (When you first purchase a new car) and a light satin. Just enough sheen to spruce up the interior, but not like a basted turkey that looks greasy or oily. Just right.

works great except on windows
Size: 32 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Fresh
I bought this to clean everything (dash, door trim and jambs, custom floor mats, infotainment system, center console, windows) but my leather seats and it cleans well and dries quickly without leaving behind that sticky and unnatural shine which is what I prefer. if you like everything having that “wet” look, this isn’t the product for you. my one complaint is that it absolutely does not leave a steak free finish on windows which is fine as I should probably own stock in Sprayway at this point. I was just hoping to carry one less cleaning product but this eliminated 2 so I count that as a win.

Chemical Guys Total Interior Cleaner & Protectant 16oz
Size: 16 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Fresh
A True All-in-One Interior Cleaner That Delivers The Chemical Guys Total Interior Cleaner & Protectant has quickly become one of my favorite detailing products. If you’re like me and want one product that can handle multiple surfaces inside your car, this is about as close to perfect as it gets. It’s versatile, effective, and safe to use on just about everything, which makes it a huge time-saver compared to juggling several specialized cleaners. What stands out most is the versatility. I’ve used this on my dashboard, touchscreen, center console, door panels, leather seats, steering wheel, and even glass with excellent results. It wipes away dust, light dirt, fingerprints, and smudges with ease, and it doesn’t leave behind streaks or any sticky residue. The finish is clean and natural—there’s no over-the-top greasy shine, just a subtle, refreshed look that makes the whole interior feel new again. Another highlight is the built-in UV protection. Living in a sunny area, I’ve seen dashboards and plastics fade or crack over time. Knowing this cleaner has UV blockers gives me peace of mind that I’m not just cleaning but also protecting the surfaces from long-term damage. That’s a major plus that many other interior cleaners don’t provide in one step. The scent is another nice touch. It has a fresh, light smell that makes the car feel clean without being overpowering or artificial. Some cleaners leave behind strong chemical odors, but this one is subtle enough that it doesn’t clash with air fresheners or linger too heavily after use. Application is simple. Spray it directly on the surface or onto a microfiber cloth, wipe, and you’re done. It doesn’t streak screens or glass, which honestly surprised me the first time I used it—I expected at least some hazing, but it left my infotainment screen spotless. It’s also gentle enough that I don’t worry about damaging sensitive areas like electronics or leather. In terms of performance, I can’t really find any negatives. For deep stains or heavily neglected interiors, you might need more specialized products, but as a general maintenance cleaner, this is exactly what I want. It keeps the whole car interior looking clean and well-maintained without having to carry around a shelf full of different sprays. Overall, the Chemical Guys Total Interior Cleaner & Protectant is a must-have for anyone serious about keeping their car in great condition. It’s versatile, easy to use, smells pleasant, and adds UV protection on top of cleaning power. I’d recommend it to anyone—from casual car owners who just want a quick wipe-down solution to enthusiasts who detail regularly. For me, this is a solid 5-star product—an all-in-one solution that lives up to its promise and makes interior detailing faster and easier.
