Springtime royalty, the delightful Earlybird™ Purple Blue Columbine (Aquilegia caerulea 'Earlybird Purple Blue') is a regal little herald of spring that brings rich color and whimsical form to your flower beds! This perennial beauty flaunts outward-facing, violet-purple sepals that surround a soft blue corolla and creamy white center.

With an early bloom time and compact form, this hybrid Columbine is a must-have for fans of pollinator plants, cool-season color, and cottage-style charm. It blooms in mid-spring to early summer and often reblooms in cooler climates!

Growing just under a foot tall and equally wide, this herbaceous perennial forms a tidy, mounded clump of delicate, ferny blue-green foliage. The blooms rise gracefully above the foliage, held aloft on strong, wiry stems that sway gently in the breeze. After flowering, the plant forms decorative seed pods if left untrimmed. The leaves may go dormant in heat but regrow again when cooler temps return.

Native to parts of North America, Columbines have long symbolized wisdom, strength, and faith. The Earlybird™ series is specially bred for compact size, earliness, and colorful performance.

Key Features

  • Outward-facing purple and blue blooms with white centers
  • Compact and tidy growth habit under 12 inches tall and wide
  • Early to bloom in spring and may rebloom
  • Attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies
  • Resistant to deer and rabbits
  • Cold-hardy perennial for zones 3-9

Landscaping Uses

Perfect for the front of your border or tucked into dappled shade, this 9-12 inch tall perennial brings saturated color and storybook charm wherever it's planted. A favorite of hummingbirds and bumblebees, it's resistant to deer and rabbits and ideal for woodland edges, shade gardens, and high-altitude landscapes.

Mix and match with other Earlybird™ Columbines like Yellow or Earlybird™ Red for a colorful spring garden!

Care and Maintenance

Hardy in USDA growing zones 3 through 9, this variety thrives in cooler climates and tolerates part shade to full sun. This Aquilegia hybrid is an herbaceous perennial, meaning it dies back in fall and reemerges stronger each spring. It's relatively low maintenance, and drought-tolerant once established, and prefers cooler climates or filtered sun in hotter zones. Sometimes it goes dormant during the summer heat and during prolonged drought.

  • Planting Time: Early spring or fall. Read more on planting Columbines here!
  • Sun Needs: Full sun in cool climates; afternoon shade in warmer zones
  • Soil Needs: Well-drained, humus-rich soil; tolerates clay if amended
  • Moisture Needs: Medium; water regularly during the first season, drought-tolerant after
  • Arborist Mulch: A 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch helps keep roots cool and moist
  • Fertilization Needs: Compost or balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring
  • Pruning Info: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage rebloom
  • Division Info: Divide clumps every 3-4 years in early spring or fall
  • Renewal Pruning: Trim foliage back in late summer if it declines
  • Special Needs/Perks/Growing Tips and Tricks for Success: Deer and rabbit resistant; attracts pollinators; does best in cooler climates; protect from hot afternoon sun

Great start
Format: Kindle
I loved this book! It's funny but still deals with tough themes, like chronic illness, a serial killer on the loose, and a dash of self-harm. The guys are interesting and distinct, we don't know too much about them yet. It does end on a really terrible cliffhanger but on the bright side the next book is out and I believe the series is complete. I have enjoyed both of these authors separately and this is a great team up!

Fudge!
Format: Kindle
Titles aren’t my strong suit. Sorry not sorry. That ending has me completely frustrated book two isn’t out yet. Just throwing that out there. First thing first, this is a high school book where the lead is under 18. Yea yea she’s about month from being an adult, but I can’t say I would’ve even opened the file if I’d realized. It’s not a smut fest or anything, but there is sexual tension as each party figures out their emotions. That being said, it’s a good book. There are some troubling parts, like how the supes come into their powers at 13, but most of those are dealt with in a way that makes sense. Kian is the exception. His whole arc pisses me off, especially since no one stepped in. Reflecting back on real world situations, ten or so years ago, I can see it happening, but it still makes me sick. Which, I’m sure was the whole damn point. For the most part, Courting Darkness is a fun read. I found myself laughing along with most of the set up. By the time it started getting serious, I’d grown to like the characters enough it held an impact. I’ll be adding book two to my list for when it comes out.

Intriguing
Format: Kindle
An intriguing story that played out slowly while introducing some unique characters. The story became quite fascinating to read as these same characters provided startling revelations to their lives. As their relationships evolve, more drama and mystery is revealed adding to my fascination. I can’t wait to read more.

Outstanding Story!!!!!!!
Format: Kindle
Oh I loved this story. Sera is such an amazing, fun character. She has so much fire inside of herself. She has humor that makes you laugh with her sassy comments. The guys are fantastic. I don’t feel as if we really have gotten to know who and what they are but they are such a mix of fae. The story is extremely well written and developed. It had me pulled in and didn’t let go. There was so much action, drama, and suspense. Then we get to the ending and goodness there is so much going on. This ending was a major cliffhanger and I absolutely can’t wait to see what happens next.

Exceptional
Format: Kindle
I think this an exciting entertaining story different from other fantasy reverse harmen story. I love the 1st book in this series and hope it continues to weave a story of friendship, love and disappointment as well as sadness. The cliffhanger was gripping and held you in suspense that waiting until the next book was released was almost too much. I’m so glad I waited to read this series until the majority of the books were released. Katie May and Quinn Arthur’s are wonderful writers and I’m looking forward to reading more from both of them.
